I don’t use shea butter a lot, but it is a natural product that I incorporate into my hair regimen in a couple of ways. When I first started experimenting with it in 2010, I found it was too heavy and waxy to use as a sealer for my ends. It just sat on top of my hair like wax and made it look dull and ashy. Coincidentally enough, it just sat on top of my skin as well. My skin would be shiny …and it would just come off on my clothes and chairs!!! So, I started using shea butter by mixing it with Eco Styler Olive Oil gel to smooth and control my edges. And, it works great for me using it that way.
I also include it in my coconut oil whip that I use mostly for my hair now (it wasn’t doing much for my skin, which had become more and more miserably dry and cracked with natural remedies … had to go back to the old school stuff with water and parabens!! But, I haven’t given up on natural entirely yet. Just haven’t had time to research a new “formula!).
Anywho, above is the shea butter that I use. Nothing special … no name brand. Just “Raw African Shea Butter.” Wei picks it up for me from the vendors in Harlem!! It says 100% natural … but, doesn’t say 100% raw shea butter … so who’s to say if it is? BUT, I think it is shea butter because it’s off white and very solid. Some “shea butter” that is sold is yellow/amber in color and the reason I’m writing this is to share that yellow “shea” may not actually be shea butter. A couple of years ago, I watched a YouTube video by DuchessGabrielle wherein she shared that the yellow butter is from a different tree and is actually called African butter. She explained that both butters are beneficial, but that they are not the same. So, just wanted to share her videos on shea butter and African butter for those of you who are interested in knowing the differences between the two and the benefits!
Shea Butter 101: Off-White Shea Butter
Shea Butter 102: Yellow Shea Butter
Do you use “shea butter?” If so, which one do you use, off-white or yellow, and how do you use it? If you use both, do you see any differences?
Shelli’s friend Courtney sent this article from TheRoot.com to her, Great Video: “My Husband Does My Twist Out.” (Watch the videos by NaturalMe4C here [part 1] and here [part 2].)
Right from the beginning, I knew I was gonna write about it. Excuse me? What did you ask? Why am I so enthralled by this particular video? Well, because there are a bunch of things about the video that I can relate to and appreciate. Like what, you ask? Oh … I’ll be honored to let you know. SO … in no particular order …
THE TOP 5 REASONS WHY I LOVE THESE VIDEOS
- I relate to knowing a few natural hair terms and feeling pride when I get a chance to use them … even when I am wrong when trying to slide them into a conversation!
- When Shelli finally noticed me, there was someone else trying to impress her. I had to sit there and watch. It wasn’t too bad though. I just paid attention to her fine ass!
- I believe in the idea of wanting to do your Significant Other’s hair as an act of love and not as an act of beautification. BUT … I also understand why it doesn’t happen!
- I believe in creativity … and the HARP METHOD and in the SPRAY & PRAY! The HARP METHOD is like a multi-tasking, multi-finger detangling method. And the SPRAY & PRAY is … well … it is what it sounds like. Spray something and pray that it works! I make a motion that we immediately include them both in the natural hair care lexicon!
- The main reason I love this video is because it was made to share love and laughter! And I support the sharing of love and laughter. (See her face at the 2:40 mark in part 1!)
And in conclusion … My suggestion for the week ahead is calculate how much time you spend on hair porn and make sure that you spend AT LEAST that amount of QUALITY TIME with your Significant Other. You can even offer to wash your S.O.’s hair or massage their scalp! (Be careful … the scalp massage is a SERIOUS MATTER! I’ll tell you about that at another time!)
Have a great week!
p.s. … NO .. I am not doing Shelli’s hair … I like her smile … Messing with her hair would create a non-smile reaction … possibly tears … so … NAH!!!
I posted this on my FB Page a long time ago. It came to mind because of the Bunning Challenge.
O_O Bun porn. Ain’t no other way to put it.
Okay, here is another installment of “Random Things Shelli Likes” post ;)! In fact, that should say “Loves!” So, Community is one of those little jewels that is right up my alley with its silly, irreverent, clever and absurd characters and stories. This is a series that definitely has hits and misses. Sometimes you have to wade through some pretty ho-hum episodes … but it’s sooooo worth it. Because, when they get it right? They get it sooooo RIGHT!! This episode was one of those times.
The plot? Our cast of characters all attend Greendale Community College. A friendly campus-wide paintball game has taken a drastic turn and a war now ensues. Why? Because the prize is … Priority Registration. The last man standing has first choice when scheduling classes in the fall. GO!
Best … episode … EVER.
I’m so happy that it got renewed for a fourth season!!! It was touch and go there for a while! I was going to be devastated if it didn’t return as there is so little “Theatre of the Absurd” type TV out there to feed my predilection for clever, geeky silliness. And so, for my other Community fans out there, how AWESOME is this poster:)?!?!?
(I REALLY need to start watching Dr. Who as I hate knowing that I’m missing out on hilarious references. Plus, I don’t want to chance getting my “Geek” card revoked. ;))
Four post in one day?!?! Unheard of!! LOL!! I had to do it, because I came across this video this morning while web surfing and had to share it with you guys. It’s so inspiring! I hope that anyone who is struggling with their hair now will be inspired and know that it’s possible to overcome damage that seems insurmountable with the proper care, patience, consistency and diligence. I hope that my hair looks this great when I eventually do a press and curl!
Well, without further ado, enjoy and be inspired!
