Sofistafunking at The Mane Event

Standard

PIC HEAVY POST

curls

So, a couple of weeks ago, I was a “model” in the Sofistafunk fashion show at the Mane Event (Luna Stage, West Orange). And, for such a special occasion, I wanted to do something a little special with my hair. So, I opted for a twist and curl (TnC) set on small perm rods.

curls8Up to the wee hours of the night (like, 2 am) washing, conditioning, and setting my hair.

Curly ‘Fro TnC Set

  • Separated freshly washed, conditioned, and finger detangled hair into 4 sections (2 in front, 2 in back). Did next steps working section by section.
  • Applied Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner.
  • Applied Curl Prep Sweet Buttah curl cream.
  • Using tail of rattail comb, began parting hair in small squar-ish sections.
  • Applied small amount of Eco Styler Olive Oil gel to smaller sections, two-strand twisted hair, and rolled twist on small grey perm rod (I always cover my rods in end paper to prevent snagging on take down).
  • Repeated until entire head set (I used a spray bottle, as needed, to dampen dried hair).

Now, I did this late at night and had to get up early as call time was 10 am and the fashion show didn’t start until 6 pm!! So, I knew that I needed to get my workout in first thing in the morning. And, I was praying that my hair would dry in that short time as well.

curls9

Well, my hair wasn’t dry in the morning … but that didn’t deter me. I got Day 146 of my 365 Days of Fitness in with a 20 minute run, rollers, hairnet and all!! I ended up lugging my portable, soft bonnet, Gold n’ Hot dryer along with me and sitting under it for a good 2 hours while the other models in the show got their hair and make-up “did!”

Once my hair finally felt dry, I smoothed a little SheaDecadence Sweet Marmalade Pomade down the twists to seal and add shine … then I fought to release some of them as the ends were snaring on each other. I was sure that all my efforts would be in vain as I felt frizz setting in as I wrangled with twists and got sweaty and annoyed with the take down process!! But … all’s well that ends well …

curls14

Yup!! It turned out pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. There was some frizz from shorter strands near my front part, but, other than that, it was all good. And, in fact, I think it looked better in person! Photos always seem to make hair look smaller than it does in person! LOL!

So, after the hair was in order, I got made and dressed up all pretty like and eventually hit the “runway” with all the other lovely ladies in their gorgeous Sofistafunk finery!!

No. No, I don’t know how to wobble. LOL!!

Now, some pics:

Oh … and one last thing … I got to play bride for a moment with some fashion wizardry by Arlinda …

Tee hee … I felt purrrty!!

OOTD: Tame Hair, “Wild” Outfit

Standard

jan_bun3

Just popping on really quickly to say, “Hey!” and show you what I was working with yesterday. *lol* So, yeah, the basic boring, tame bun is back. But seriously, buns are soooo easy and work for me! I pulled back my hair and made a bun by wrapping the hair and securing with hair pins (I’m getting the hang of those now and prefer them over bobby pins as they don’t snag and yank out strands of my hair when removed). I didn’t use anything to secure my hair into a ponytial. NO elastic; NO banana clip. Then, I just mixed a little shea butter and Eco Styler Olive Oil gel to smooth my edges before tying down with a satin scarf for the drive to work. My hair is on its last leg now and needs to be washed this weekend though as it’s been two weeks since my last washing session.

Now onto my “wild” outfit. LOL. It’s not really wild, but the title worked as the skirt is leopard. I am definitely getting my money’s worth out of this purchase. I honestly adore this skirt! It fits me like a glove and it’s just a great leopard print! I paired it with another closet fave, a structured, grey, wool blazer that I picked up at Marshall’s in 2011. I love the details at the shoulders on this blazer, and the lean cut and lapels make it so sleek. I paired the skirt and blazer with a black, blouson tank with a tie-neck, but left the ties hanging so they almost look like an open men’s tie. I finished the look off with black fishnet stockings, black ankle booties and gold hoop earrings.

jan_greyandleopard

I have a full length shot on my camera, but I’ll have to upload that to my computer and add it to the post later.

Oh, and on another note, I made a new coconut oil body butter on Wednesday night!!

cocoabutter_bodywhip

It smells like chocolate!! I’ll share the recipe for this one soon. And, I plan on being a little mixtress this weekend too. Want to try a bentonite clay mask like I told you the other day and I also plan on trying my hand at making some flaxseed gel. I’ve made that before as well, but cooked the seeds too long, I think. So, the gel was too thick and viscous. Want to give it another go and see what it do ;).

HAPPY FRIDAY LADIES!!!!

What do you have planned for MLK Day Weekend?

A Les Miserables Revival and an OOTD

Standard

A scene from “Les Miserables” now at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia.

I am realizing that I have had an eventful 8 days! LOL! This past Saturday, my sister Sheri, her friend and I went to see Les Miserable at the Kimmel Performing Arts Center Academy of Music in Philadelphia. You see, during our trip to Mexico last summer, we were talking about favorite musicals and I said Les Miserables. I saw it three times between my junior year in high school and senior year in college and loved it so much that I bought the soundtrack to the production many years ago. And, I listen to it relatively often … sometimes tearing up in my car or even bawling (if it’s one of those kind of days) as I sing along. Well, Sheri’s other friend loved it as well, but Sheri had never seen it. So, long before we knew the movie was coming to theaters, we bought tickets to the Philadelphia production.

So, on Saturday, we headed out to Philly a little early to have brunch at a nice French restaurant called Parc. I had French toast with apples and walnut butter.

photo 2-1

Mmmmm … nap please.

Then we headed over to the theater. After some confusion with our balcony box seats … yeah, a young kid was sitting in one and said his mom was in the bathroom with the tickets — when she returned, they were in the wrong seats :/ … we were seated and ready for the show.

IMG_7796photo 4IMG_7791

Now … as to the musical … ummm. Now, remember, Les Mis is my favorite musical. I’ve seen it three times and listen to the soundtrack regularly. Well, this production was just “alright.” It was definitely a disappointment to me as I felt it didn’t have the emotional depth of the productions I’ve seen in the past. It felt too rushed and I thought some songs were not sung with the vulnerability and misery that draws the audience into the pain of the characters. Everyone sang very well, especially Jean valJean and Javert. Eponine was extremely lacking in my opinion. She did not speak with the hackney that is expected of her low class character and she actually sang “On My Own” with a harsh belligerence!!! I was looking around like, “What the frick is this?!?!” Overall, I just felt several of the characters didn’t “bring it.” I remember BAWLING at it the three times I saw it previously. I barely teared up once at this production. At the end of the day, Les Miserable wasn’t that … well, miserable. I’m gonna have to listen to the soundtrack to get a good cry. *lol*

Alright, now really quickly, just had to share my OOTD! On Friday, I decided to hit Marshall’s to find something to wear. I’d exhausted my wardrobe in the last month of so and worn everything that fit me. So, I decided to see if I could find a dress that would accommodate my “generous” posterior and hips now, but would still fit me when I lose this dang weight! That’s why I love dresses!!

Anywho, I scored big time with this great silk print Anne Klein dress!!

AK4AK6

This dress retails for $450 according to the slip, was originally $179.99 at Marshall’s and I got it on clearance for … drum roll please … $39!!!

AKpricetag

Woot Woot!! I love that this dress is sleeveless and lightweight as it makes it great for layering in the winter and wearing alone in the summer!! I ended up layering it with a few old items in my closet: an orange cardigan from J.Crew and a deep plum corduroy blazer from Old Navy. It was so nice out on Saturday, that all I needed out was my Christmas gift from Wei, one of those lovely and dramatic chain rope scarves from LuluandLoie that I shared with you guys here.

AKcollage

Finally, I accessorized with a necklace and earring set that I bought from a cousin at a family reunion a few years ago and a pair of Jessica Simpson boots that I picked up at a Marshall’s a couple of years ago.

Oh, and finally, my hair was a refreshed braid-out with a new product that I’ll have to tell you about later.

But today, it’s back to the bun!!

Happy Monday ladies!!

What did you do this weekend?!

Wallis Fashion 30% off EVERYTHING Flash Event

Standard

I forgot to tell you guys about the last big WallisFashion.com sale, so I had to tell you about this one! Through this Saturday, December 1st, EVERYTHING in the store is up to 30% off aaaaaaand it also looks like they are giving an additional 10% off your purchase with discount code: SALE 10 (don’t know if that runs through Saturday, but just google discount codes and try WALLIS10 too as that has worked for me several times!)!! Also, there’s FREE SHIPPING on all orders over $30!

If you don’t recall, this is the other reasonably priced online UK seller (Asos being the first ;)) from which I purchased that awesome leopard print skirt that I showed you guys here , here and here.

At the last big sale, I picked up this really cute peplum skirt and jacket … which fit, but will fit a lot better once I lose about 5 pounds (Operation “Get Right” is on Day 3 today; Ahhhhhhh here it go!!!).

Once I lose those 5 pounds, I’ll take it on a test drive and will share pics for sure!

Now, with this up to 30% off EVERYTHING sale, plus the additional 10% that you can get off all purchases with discount code: SALE 10, I’m eyeballing this black crepe waterfall jacket and black PU pencil skirt. I think these might be great holiday pieces that work well from day to evening too!

My only concerns? Will the waterfalls put a spotlight on my “ample” hips, which I’m aiming to camouflage and is that PU skirt LINED?!? I’m a sweater. This could be a reallllly bad look … and feel … if it isn’t. Hmmm, I guess I could always wear a slip though. PROBLEM SOLVED!! (Seriously, I just figured that out as I was writing this! LOL!!)

A quick note: Wallis has UK sizes with a conversion chart for the US. So, just make certain that you follow that! I’ve found that when I chose an honest US size (8 for skirts = 12 UK size and 6 for tops = 10 UK size) the clothes fit my 5’1″, currently … ughhhh … 143 pound, slightly pear-shaped, hourglass frame well.

Anywho, just wanted to share! Do you guys like when I share discounts and sales at the places that I like to shop? Hope so! Let me know one way or the other in the comments *hint hint* (If you didn’t figure it out, that’s my way of trying to get you guys to comment. It’s been quiet around here for weeks with the exception of that Ebonnet Giveway post!! *lol*)

ETA: Ummm … how about I ordered the PU skirt and forgot about it? It was at my door when I got home from work a few minutes ago!!! LMBO!!!

Perfect fit! I love it when a plan comes together!!

I should order it in the size 10 UK/6 US  too so that I have one for when I lose this weight! That’s what I did with the leopard print! 😉 Yeah, about that losing weight … time to get changed and hit the basement for C25K Day 2!

****************************************************************************************************************************

Speaking of the holidays, what are you planning to wear for dinners and events? Is it already hanging in your closet or are you still trying to figure it out?

Gold & Leopard

Standard

Despite that smile, it’s been a long week y’all. Meeting after meeting after meeting, with two 3+ hour roundtrip commutes thrown in for good measure. Few more meetings today and need to clean house tonight, so no rest for the weary (mind you, I feel guilty even saying that in comparison to you ladies with kids! I don’t know how I’m ever going to do that! I’m already tired and I’m old! *lol*).

Anywho, quick post to share my outfit from yesterday. I’m giving that leopard skirt from Wallis a workout (sorry, it’s out of stock as of the date of this post)! I paired it with a black tank and a tulip-sleeve, gold brocade fitted jacket that I got from Atelier in Montclair for about $12, I think! I accessorized with white-trimmed, black T-strap BGBG Girls platforms and a cute little, gold and cream flower earrings and necklace set that I got at Walmart in the spring.

My hair was essentially in the same tuck and roll from the previous day with a different flower.

A little worse for the wear at the end of the day,
but you get the idea.

By the way, did you notice the nice little bruiser on my cheek?!

I was outside of work on Wednesday night talking to a friend and got bit the frick up by mosquitos or something! I have four bites on my right leg too!!

Can you tell how big, red and swollen these things are?!? They itch like crazy!! Okay, sorry. That was completely random, but just needed to share my pain with you guys ;).

Alright, gotta go!

Happy Friday!

Hello Bye Bye …

Standard

I’m very tentative about trying new products anymore. I know what works on my hair and I don’t want to cause a setback with untested products. I’m especially hesitant about shampoos and conditioners, as those can be make or break products for me. Stylers cause less difficulties. Therefore, I’m more willing to experiment with those when companies send me products to try/review.

Therefore, when I saw the sample size bottles of shampoo and conditioner that arrived in the mail last week … I wasn’t sure if I wanted to try them, especially given the state of my hair. I hadn’t washed it in two weeks and it was a rat’s nest of tangles. I’d styled it in a WnG that I bunned haphazardly and failed to re-moisturize for most of week two.

On Friday night, I pre-pooed with Aubrey GPB mixed with Vatika Oil and it took over an hour (maybe two?) and required the periodic use of scissors to cut out several untenable knots. So, when I say that I didn’t think that there would be enough of the conditioner in the four little 1 oz. sample-size conditioner bottles to detangle my hair on a good day, let alone on a day where it was a tangle-ridden, shed hair filled mess, I’m not kidding you.

But, you see, this wasn’t any random company that had sent me these products. No. They were sent by the wife of a friend of Wei’s who started a new haircare line, Bye Bye Parabens. So, I felt obligated to at least give them a go … though I did so with immense hesitation.

via Bye Bye Parabens

Bye Bye Parabens is pleased to announce the launch of its new luxury line of hair care products. The first product designed to dramatically transform natural or curly hair into soft hair with unbelievable shine, body, and bounce. Bye Bye Paraben products are also sulfate & paraben free and made from non-toxic natural and organic ingredients. Bye Bye Parabens was founded by Tracy Riggs who is an award winning international master stylist and salon owner with over 20 years experience in the hair industry. Tracy has styled the likes of Erykah Badu, Lil Kim, Mary J Blige, and Charlie Baltimore but more importantly servicing thousands of mom’s, wives, and daughters over a 20 year period. Tracy Riggs saw a need for a sulfate & paraben free hair care line that would be safe to use without sacrificing the integrity of the hair and that would achieve optimum results.

SEE 10/25/12 EDITOR’S RETRACTION BELOW REGARDING INGREDIENTS LIST

The Experiment
I was sent four 1 oz. sample size bottles each the Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo and Conditioner. I decided to start by diluting about 3/4 of the bottle of shampoo in about 6 ounces of water.  My hair was in 8 twists and I shampooed the roots and then squished the suds through the length of my hair. The shampoo had a refreshing minty scent and a nice tingle. My scalp and hair felt clean, without feeling stripped. Shampooing also didn’t seem to cause any additional matting at my roots, which sometimes happens to my hair with sudsy shampoos. In fact, although I LOVE the Aubrey conditioners, the Green Tea Shampoo was not doing me any favors. Last week, I used it for a body wash because I ran out of the real stuff!! LOL!! But, anywho, I was pleased that my hair didn’t feel any worse for the wear after using the Rosemary Mint shampoo.

After rinsing, I planned to try one bottle of the purifying conditioner on one twist. I even grabbed a new bottle of HE HH from under the sink as I was prepared to need it to finish the job. I just knew that there was no way that those little sample size bottles of conditioner would provide enough product or slip to detangle my whole head. But, after I applied the conditioner to my first twist, I was like, “What’s this here now??” OMGosh!!! The slip was great!! Definitely comparable to HE HH, if not better as I didn’t seem to need to use as much!! I hopped out of the shower to tell Wei, “Color me impressed!!” LOL!! I ended up using three bottles to do my whole head. But, I think that I was a little heavy-handed with that first section and could have gotten away with two bottles if I had spread the wealth around a little more!!

Anywho, after finger detangling with the conditioner under the shower stream (so helpful!), I rinsed and applied Darcy’s Botanicals Pumpkin Seed Rose Conditioner to DC. I kept it in for about an hour using my Thermal Heat Wrap. Then, I cooled and sealed with diluted Aubrey Green Tea Cream Rinse and finally rinsed it all out with cold water.

Initial Thoughts
My hair felt “loverly!!” In fact, it felt so good that I didn’t even apply any leave-in conditioner! I just re-twisted it and applied a little JBCO/EVOO to the twists to seal in the water.

My hair dried quickly and the twists were so soft and plump! My God-cousin’s 30th birthday party was that evening and I simply released the twists with Wonder Curl Polishing Pomade for a fluffy twist-out.

I gotta say that I was impressed by my first experience with Bye Bye Parabens! I am glad that I gave it a try, despite my initial hesitation ;).

Conclusions
To wrap this up, I still love HE HH for the amazing slip and cheap price tag. So, I will continue to use it for henna rinsing. But, because I do like to incorporate as many natural products as I can, this may become a “go to” as a post-shampoo detangler if my next experience is as pleasant as my first one!

10/25/12 EDITOR’S RETRACTION: Last week, I received full-size bottles of Bye Bye Parabens conditioner and shampoo. I looked at the ingredients lists on the bottles and found that both the shampoo and conditioner contain the silicone  DIMETHICONE and the conditioner also contains CYCLOPENTASILOXANE. The silicones are high on the ingredients lists. Based upon the lists of ingredients that were sent to me by via e-mail, I thought that these products were silicone free. They are not. So, they are not a natural alternative to HE HH and actually contain non water-suluble, build-up prone silicones versus build-up resistant cones the HE HH. That being said, this conditioner would not be a natural option or an option for those practicing the CG Method, the TCM Method or following a co-wash only regimen.

And that’s it. Oh, wait, one more thing. Because I do like to anticipate your needs, I’ll just let you know that the outfit above (it’s not a dress!! It’s a peplum top worn with the skirt that I previously showed you here) was another one that I jacked from Style Pantry!! To see Folake rocking it and find “where to buy” info, click here.

Happy Monday!!

Return of the Satin-Lined Fall Hat

Standard

“Bye bye summer. I think I’ll miss you most of all.”

With the last day of summer here, what better time to share my most recent acquisition?!? Dottie of Threadmill (an Etsy Shop) hooked me up!! A couple of weeks ago, I asked her to make a satin-lined hat that would match my plaid cape coat.

Well, I got it in the mail yesterday!! Yea!!! Though I’m bemoaning the change of seasons, I am excited to wear my satin-lined hats, tights, boots and layers!! So, it’s all good!

Later Days!!

(p.s. Stay tuned for a Threadmill Fall Giveaway announcement next week and just in time for the cool weather;)!!

Fashion’s Night Out in Montclair, NJ

Standard

PIC HEAVY POST AHEAD!!

Okay, so I apologize for it taking so long to post on last night’s event … but seriously … I took 407 pictures!!! It was a lot of HARD work to download, rotate, resize, save, import, organize and caption these jokers man!!! Shoot, I may have just used up the last of my free media space with the pictures you are about to see in this slide show. I didn’t include all 407, but there are 111 here!! So yeah, pic heavy post ahead!!

Waiting for the festivities to begin.

The event was so much fun!! I thought it was all going down at Atelier Boutique, but it was actually staged at three different, but close, locations in downtown Montclair. And, with the Democratic National Convention and the POTUS speaking, MTV Video Music Awards and Fashion’s Night Out in NYC all occurring the same evening, there was really a nice little turn out!!

The first “stage” of the evening.

The first stage was Gallery U, an actual art gallery, where designs by Blackbird Lane, One Savvy Design, Speakeasy Vitage, Clarence Black Couture, Mark Tauriello Couture, Boyfriend Clothing Company and Bumblebee Boutique were on display. At this point, I tried my best to get photos of the fashion. However, my camera shutter speed and temp display mode were sooo slow that I did a horrible job of capturing the designs.

Loved this dress! Wish I had been able to get a full length front shot of it!

Then I headed over to Parlor Hair Studio where I hooked up with a couple of friends to see the next show. But yeah, Sofistafunk the Skirt Company didn’t present a mere fashion show … they presented a Skirtopera!! Seriously, this was the main event and what I paid … well, I didn’t pay anything, the night was free 😉 … to see!!

Second event of the evening and the one I really was excited to see!!

By this time, I’d scanned my camera settings several times and figured out how to take continuous shots. It didn’t always work and I was cursing at and shaking my camera the whole show. But, I did get tons of fab shots as you’ve probably figured out since I said I took 407 photos ;)! You’ll also get a chance to judge my claim when you see the slide show at the end of the post!

She was giving all kinds of face!! Fierce!!

Gorgeous!! You know I was checking out the hair!!

Sooooo Wuthering Heights!! Love the intense blue sleeves popping out of the crow black!!

Just PERFECTION!! Is this to die for or what??

And here’s Tiffany, the winner of the Sofistafunk & Hairscapades Natural Model Search!!

And then we wrapped up the evening at Atelier Boutique with a “rack sale” and raffle (but, for some reason, I didn’t get a raffle ticket!! Booooooh!! LOL!).

Clothes and raffles … what more could a girl want??

Arlinda McIntosh (the genius and talented designer behind Sofistafunk), Tiffany and me.

I did walk away with a really cute little gold, tulip-sleeve fitted jacket for $25!! Should have taken a pic of that as it looked pretty hot with my leopard print skirt!! LOL!!

And that was that! Enjoy!!
