Marsha’s Final GOC Update

Standard

Marsha (Sixth Wave) of Hairoly (aka 24 Hour Hair)

So, the last few months I was a member of the GOC on Hairscapades. The challenge started in August 2011, which was a spin off of the Kim Coles/Curly Nikki GOC that took place at the start of February 2011. I vowed to protect my hair more in order to have a healthier outcome. I also vowed to eat better and exercise more in order to lose only a few pounds.

Weight:
I failed at exercising. However, I have continued to eat right, cheating from time to time. I am currently 121.5 lbs as of this morning, not the 118 lbs like I wanted to be.

Hair Regimen:

  • I still henna monthly.
  • I shampoo or co-wash my hair every 5-7 days.
  • I deep condition every wash day.
  • I steamed my hair with the steamer maybe twice since the start of the challenge.
  • I purchased a hooded soft bonnet drier and I actually prefer it over the steamer.
  • I pre-poo maybe every other wash day or when I have time to do so overnight.
  • I do more scalp massages more now than before, since my setback with my new found love,  rosewater and peppermint oil, sealing with jojoba oil and/or CD Some of Marguerite’s Magic.
  • I have learned that sticking with what works also increases the health and growth of my hair.
  • I have been doing more protective styles which includes, flexi rodsupdos and mini/microtwists without extensions.

I might not have reached the length that I would prefer, but I definitely feel like my hair has more fullness to it … Anyway, my healthy hair journey and GOC will always continue.

Flexi Rod Set

Standard

Remember Marsha’s experiments with Curlformers? Well, now she’s back with a Flexi-Rod set!

***********************************************************************************************************************

by Marsha of Hairology (aka 24 Hour Hair)

So, the last few weeks I have been trying more low manipulation hair styles. The first weeks I have done curlformers and my styles, although simple ponytails, have saved me in the mornings. At nights, I wouldn’t do anything with my hair, only put on my satin bonnet. In the past, after having a two strand twist set, I would re-twist each night to untwist in the mornings, repeating the process for, like, 3-4 nights in a row. Too much manipulation. Although it has been, like, almost 4 weeks of doing the roller/curlformer sets, I have definitely seen some improvements. Oh, another thing, I have been doing a lot more search and destroy methods. Doing this, I would get the little split ends or shabby ends before they attack the rest of my hair.

Okay, so this week’s set was done using flexi-rods. I have tried flexi-rods in the past, but never attempted a full head. Applying the flexi-rods were easier and quicker than the Curlformers. The curls were popping, yet my roots were really puffy. I started to use the Motions foam setting wrap lotion and my CD Healthy Hair Butter, but I had to rinse my hair and start again without the setting lotion. When I placed the setting lotion on my hair, it instantly felt coarse and dry, even after I added the hair butter. So, I decided to only use the hair butter. Flexi-rods on my head remind me of the lady with worms and snakes in her hair.

NOT CUTE.

So this is what my set looked like after removing rods:

Okay, I know, my roots were awful. I separated and it looked a little better.

My hair felt uber soft and really moisturized. I think I might have been too heavy-handed with the hair butter, because my hair was very oily.

So using some hair tools, I pinned my hair up because my hair down had a weird uneven shape.

November GOC Update: Marsha

Standard

by Marsha of Hairology

Well, I haven’t done a post in a while for the simple fact that I have been up to nothing much. I have been wearing my hair the majority of the days in my infamous banana clip bun. My hair care regimen has been oh so simple. I add moisture every day, shampooing and doing a deep conditioning treatment once a week. I took pictures of any new hairstyles that I tried in the last few weeks. I am not sure if my hair has grown much, however it seems healthier.

October GOC Update: Marsha

Standard

by Marsha of Hairology

What have I been up to? Well as far as healthy eating … you see what had happen was … hmm … long pause …

I am not the greatest at a healthy challenge, because some days or weeks are better or worse than others. I couldn’t tell the last time I exercised. I was reminded by this after cleaning out my bathroom cabinets last week. I did a lot of squatting while cleaning out the cabinets and I felt really sore the next day. Yet the days still pass with me being nothing but a couch potato. Well I guess I would make more effort if I wasn’t 119 lbs as I am right now. I would still like to be maybe a few pounds lighter. Oh well, I have these phases that I go through. I would either work out and eat healthy like mad for a few months straight, and then I would just get bored and slack off. I wish I could get more motivated. What are good motivators?

As far as my hair…Well after I found that spot in the crown of my head (see here), I have tried not to stress about it, because that would only make it worse. However, I have not been ignoring it. It seems as if my hair grows far less than half an inch per month. I don’t know, I think genetics is the cause. Nevertheless, I would rather a thick healthy head of hair over long waist length hair any day.

I have been doing more pre-poo sessions to see if that helps. I have returned to my Kimmaytube’s leave-in, which I modified. Instead of using jojoba oil, I added avocado oil. No real reason for the modification. I have been wearing my hair in a textured bun during the days I work, which amount to four days a week. I simply twist my hair at nights in like 8-10 twists and curl the ends with satin rollers. In the mornings I would use my banana clip and tuck the ends under the clip, securing in place with hairpins or bobby pins.

So, today I was off from work and I undid my twists and I was really liking how soft my hair felt and looked.

So, I had to get my car washed because it hadn’t been washed since I drove it off the lot in over a month, and being that it’s black, it shows all the dirt. Heck it has been raining like every other day for quite some time now (excuses, excuses). Anyhow, this is how I left the house.

So after returning home I pre-pooed for  two hours, shampooed my hair and am currently sitting with Nupur Henna in my hair. I have another hour out of three to go.

Until next time … Happy growing.

September Update: Kayla

Standard

Here’s Kayla of the Sixth Wave, with her September update (which was sent to me at the beginning of October and I somehow failed to post! Sorry Kayla!!).

Flat twist out

Fitness:
I still haven’t been working out consistently. I probably worked out 5 times in September. Most of those times were recently, though, so I’m starting to get back into going to the gym. I’m also still working on drinking enough water.  One thing I have been good about is taking my vitamins.

Hair:
My regimen hasn’t really changed. I don’t have any new products, but I did add some sulfur powder to my castor/coconut oil I’ve been applying to my scalp. Since my hair is a couple of inches longer in the back than it is on the sides, it’s has a mullet-like shape:(. I don’t want to cut it yet, so I’ve been experimenting with different styles to blend the different lengths. I tried my first roller set since I cut my hair earlier this year. I used medium/small rollers to wear it curly and I really liked the results. A week later, I tried a roller set/silk wrap with large rollers.

I think this turned out really nice, but it didn’t really help the mullet situation. The last thing that I tried was a flat twist-out I saw on acurlsbf.com. Instead of 2 flat twists, I did 3.  This is the first time I’ve had a successful twist out.  Before I guess I was doing too many twists. I can see myself doing this style on a regular basis as my sides grow out. Overall I’m happy with my hair progress.

My goal for October is to incorporate trips to the gym into my schedule.

******************************************************************************************************************************

What are you talking about? I see no mullet! I see nicely layered and gorgeously shiny hair! Love both the roller set and the flat twist out! Can’t wait to read how October went:)!

G O C   U p d a t e

by Marsha of Hairology

So, what have I been up to lately when it comes to my hair? Well nothing much. I have been protecting my hair by wearing really low manipulation hair styles. I work more times than I actually go out, so it has been quite easy to do simple styles that don’t add too much stress on my hair.

New things and regimen:

  • I fell in love with my banana clip.
  • I have been using my fingers more to detangle my hair.
  • I purchased a soft bonnet-style hair dryer to do my deep treatments or dry my hair when I have no time to air dry.
  • I have fallen in love with Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia leave-in conditioner. If I am out of my Kimmaytube leave-in, I resort to my KBB. Both products leave my hair OBER soft and shiny.

I recently did a length check, which is more like a healthy hair check, and I have [had] great success. My hair feels and looks so much more healthier compared to a few months ago. Oh well, I guess I’ll continue my new routine, tweaking here and there as needed.

HAPPY HEALTHY HAIR LADIES! Until next time.

*************************************************************************************************************************O

Okay Marsha, I need you to submit full details about the bonnet dryer, as well as a review!! I know Sally’s has a few, but I wasn’t impressed. There’s a standing one on rollers that I’ve been eyeing for months, but it’s almost $130 and I just haven’t been able to bring myself to buy it. I went to Harmon’s on Sunday to see if they had any (they did not). So, I’m still in the market. Therefore, review please (which, of course, I’ll share with all of you;))!!

GOC Update: Marsha

Standard

Here’s Marsha (Sixth Wave) showing us how she got creative with protective styling in August!!

Ok the last couple of weeks I have been wearing my hair up and in a bun. Absolutely no hair ends exposed. I have been trying to be more creative so that I wouldn’t get bored. I will only wear my hair out probably once or twice a month and see if I can retain more growth/length. The first pic above is of my hair with flat twist in front and mini twist in the back.  I then undid the twist after three days.

These next pics were taken after I undid mini twist.

Another protective style…

Just roll and tuck those ends away.

I flat ironed my hair because I simply felt like it. Lol. Well on 9/4/11 I celebrated my 1 year completely natural. Yay me. I did henna treatments twice in August and I loved the results. My hair feels so silky and dark. It seems fuller since my last straightening session back in the end of July. Here is an official length check. I think I will do two henna treatments this month also.

I bought some new products. Yes I’m officially a product junkie. Don’t judge me. I got a coupon from Curlmart for buy one, get a free full-sized bottle. I got a free Olive You light conditioner and I purchased Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia leave-in conditioner. I LOVE the KBB. Definitely a keeper.

I shampoo instead of co-wash every 5-7 days. I only co-wash if I have shampooed less than a couple of days prior.

I have lost weight, but it’s not due to exercise. I am ashamed to say, but I haven’t been good with keeping up with that routine. I’ll try to do better. I weigh myself, like, everyday religiously. My scale said 117 lbs this morning, but add 2 lbs to that because, when I weigh-in at the doctor’s office, it’s always 2 lbs higher. Go figure.

Happy Growing Ladies.
