A Hair Meet-Up for Dudes?!

OK … so I am at a hair cut party with Shelli. Tameeka, Tiffany, Shelli and the crew are talking about hair, blogs, products and stuff.

I am sitting in the living room writing this entry … on my phone. It is titled …

A hair meet up for dudes?

I know that some of you saw that the Mane Man, Jor-El, was hosting an event for the Shea Moisture men’s line at their pop-up shop in Bryant Park.

Since Shelli would be stuck at the 9-5 (which is recently an 8-8!) …

Since I would already be in the area and, more importantly, …

Since it was a chance for me to meet one of the iconic brothers of natural hair care …

I proudly attended on behalf of Hairscapades. I got there a little early because I was invited by one of the event’s coordinators and figured that things would get too busy for us to talk. I was right! We spoke for a few minutes and I was presented a spiced apple cider to combat the cold and also to get me in the festive mood of the season. It worked.

Then, about 15 minutes before the scheduled opening, Jor-El arrived and I was introduced. Cool cat. And yes … his hair is something that you can’t care but to take notice of. It reminded me that I really should take better care of my hair. I used to wear my hair in a similar style to his but … well … uhhh … ummm … I am sure that my hair has NEVER looked as vibrant, big and healthy as his. And that’s from a brother that gets to see a plethora of hair crushes … DAILY. (PLUG: Reminder that you can follow Shelli on Instagram @Hairscapades!)

Jor-El and I spoke briefly about the products that Shea Moisture offers from their men’s line. Almost immediately, people walking around saw his hair and gravitated to the brother’s glow. Soon the spot was bubbling with business! My opportunity to get some consulting from the Mane Man was over!

I picked up a few things for myself and then I struggled to find something for Shelli. I knew that she liked the elixir from Shea Moisture, but didn’t know what else she liked. What? No … I don’t know everything that she uses. And you can’t be mad at me. I know you’ve seen her PJ pics!

For real … it’s good that I know a few things that she likes to use. But yet and still, can you imagine what it would have been like if I would have come home with stuff for me and just elixir for her!?! Anyway … after a bunch of questions to the knowledgeable staff at the shop, I found something for her. I finished my cider and made my way back to Shelli to share the gift of the holiday season and my story of meeting one of her male hair crushes, Mane Man. (For real … she LOVES his real name and his knowledge and articulation of hair info!)

But this isn’t the end … hopefully it’s the beginning!

I am looking for a co-host for a “Man Cave corner” at a larger meet-up. I think Jor-El would be ideal. Don’t you think so? Ask your S.O.’s if they’d come watch a football game, play video games and/or just kick it with us while you are at an event!!

Until next time …

  1. Because of your blog, I now know about Jor-El the Mane Man. I’m now following him on twitter and would love to connect others with him and you as well. Thank you for sharing your experience!

  3. Mane Man is THE man! As a fellow curly haired guy it is often difficult to find information about curly hair from guys and for guys. When I started learning about my hair and natural hair in general I frequently visited his blog and I’d highly suggest for others to do the same!
