UPDATED w/BRAID-OUT RESULTS PICS
I’m pretty proud of myself as I managed to get a lot done yesterday! My to do list?:
- Hot yoga (75 min. class) √
- Grocery shopping √
- Wash/Style hair √
- Laundry √
- Watch “Inside Man” (loaned to me 3 weeks ago) √
- Write √
One, two, three and five are complete. Four is in progress, with two loads done and put away, one in the dryer and one in the washer. And, yeah, working on number five right now;)!
As to the hair, I decided on a braid-out. Here is the wash weekend run down:
- Pre-pooed/DC with Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner mixed with Vatika oil.
- Placed hair in 6 twists.
- Shampooed in twists with diluted DevaCare No Poo.
- Conditioned with Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm (review coming soon!)
- Detangled under water stream with diluted Herbal Essences Hello Hydration applied directly over Matrix Biolage Conditioning Balm.
- Rinsed.
- Applied modified Kimmaytube leave-in (2 tbsp Kinky Curly Knot Today, 2 tbsp aloe vera juice, 1 tsp JBCO/EVOO mix).
- Used shampoo brush to do a final detangle and evenly distribute leave-in through hair.
- Set hair in 14 braids.
- Sealed ends with Wild Growth Hair Oil Light.
- Lightly oiled scalp with Wild Growth Hair Oil (original formula).
I finished my hair before leaving to hit the grocery stop and made a pitstop at Sally’s to pick up this:
You see, I was wearing a hat to camouflage my braids, but was worried about the hat messing up my roots. And, I’d been thinking about getting a fitted cap to wear under my hats for a while because, unfortunately, my satin bonnet often stick out of the sides like a saggy diaper!! *lol* And, a satin scarf caused a similar issue as it has too much material to hide. So, I remembered the Dri Sweat Active Wear Style Protector Cap and decided it was time to get one. At $3.99 (or $3.49 with Sally’s Club Card), not a bad investment as I think it’ll be great to wear under my non-lined hats come this fall and winter! And, because it has netting, it’ll be cooler than a bonnet!
So, this is what I plan on sleeping in and I hope that it’ll keep my edges smooth, while still allowing airflow o that my hair will finish drying overnight *fingers crossed*!!
In other news, I’m feeling pretty good because I completed week 2 of The Biggest Loser Cardio Max program (5 days), did Abs of Steel 5 days last week, threw in a 12 Minute Full Body Blast Ketttlebell workout on day 5 and did hot yoga too. I also had a dose of Green Vibrance most days of the week and ate well, with the exception of one slip-up on Saturday. I was going for healthy when I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad at a local pizza spot. But … DUY!! I forgot to order the dressing on the side and they DRENCHED the lettuce in Caeser! Dang. Oh well, I think hot yoga worked it out though!! Whew!! Talk about drenched!! Wei went with me and he said he doesn’t think he’s ever sweat so much in his entire life! Anywho, I finally got past the first two weeks of the Cardio Max work-out!! Week 3 and Jillian Michaels, here I come!!
And, that’s all she wrote! Literally! Well, almost …

Did you get to check off all (or most) of the items off your “to do” list this weekend?
Oh I need to get one of those caps. I was using a satin scarf for workouts, but would end up snatching it off at some point from being too hot! lol. I was just at Sally’s last week too. Oh well, another stop is in order anyway. Thanks for sharing.

Dee, they also have a Dri Sweat headband that is really sweet! It’s like the one above, but without the netting part! I shared it months ago in this post here:

I have 3 or 4! Oh, and they are $3.49 if you have a Sally’s Club Card!

Wow! You really did get a lot done, lol. I wanted to ask you how you are able to get your hair so shiny. I have just incorporated henna into my regimen, I have done a gloss twice but just did a full on application this weekend. Would you attribute the henna to your shine or do you think it’s because of your leave in or pre-poo. I haven’t tried pre-pooing or kimmaytube’s leave in yet but I am still learninig. I tried Let’s Jam curling custard and while it gives me shine, I think it may be a little too oily. Any advice?

Hi Keedy!! Well, my hair has always had a nice amount of sheen, even before henna. I think it’s partly my hair, but henna and using a light oil to seal help. Also, I always try to point out, the camera flash is reflecting off my hair madly and makes it look like it’s insanely shiny! It’s not THAT shiny! LOL!! It’s somewhere between the pics in the mirror and the flash pics, I guess. Anything that you do to help instill and sustain proper moisture levels (like pre-pooing and conditioning) will help the natural sheen of your hair. But, absent something really heavy/greasy/gelly, if your hair doesn’t naturally have a very smooth cuticle, you won’t get the shine, say, of a Chili (you know, from TLC). But, you can get a sheen that signifies that your hair is healthy. I’m not familiar with the Let’s Jam Curling Custard, but sounds like that is more of an artificial sheen rather than your hair’s healthy sheen coming through. So, I’d suggest pre-pooing and deep conditioning using the cool & seal technique I posted previously. HTH!

Thanks so much for the advice. I will definitely try to start incorporating pre-pooing into my regimen. I always had a smooth cuticle, even when relaxed, but it just seems like when the products that I am using dry, they take the shine with it, lol. I think I agree with you on the Let’s Jam custard, initially I thought I was in love but now I’m feeling like it’s just to oily with that artificial shine that you were talking about. I’d rather it have a healthy natural shine than an artificial one. Thanks again! P.S., the flash definitely makes your hair look really shiny…but definitely in a good way, lol!

I need to be busy like you–having recently moved and all, but I just don’t have the energy. Maybe this post will give me a boost to get back to exercise–which I know will give me energy. I also need to take my vitamins regularly. On another note, have you stopped using the JBCO to seal (I saw you list the WGHO? Also, have you always oiled your scalp? It seems like my hair is hardly ever shiny and only feeling moisturized for a couple of days after deep conditioning. I’m wondering if I should try lightly oiling my scalp? Thoughts? Thanks.

Veronica, I was feeling energy-less for so long and know exactly what you mean!! Exercise and eating right definitely helps with that though … it just takes finally getting moving to feel it!! And I KNOW how hard inertia is to overcome!! Took me 7 months!! LOL!!
As to JBCO, oh yeah, I still use it to seal! I tend to alternate what I use though … you know, since I’m a product junkie;). If you see, the JBCO was in my leave-in, so I used the WGHO to do the ends once they were mostly dry. Just like to mix it up sometimes. As to oiling my scalp …. nah, I haven’t always done that. I tend to only oil my scalp when it’s feeling a little tight or dry. Maybe once or twice a week. When I co-washed almost exclusively, I never oiled my scalp. In regard to your hair only being shiny and feeling moisturized for a couple days after a DC … yeah, that’s pretty normal;). Most of us have to re-moisturized and seal ever 2-3 days at least, some daily. So, listen to your hair, if it’s feeling dry or lacking sheen, add some moisture and seal with an oil or butter (whatever works for you). Oiling the scalp with something that won’t clog your pores will add sheen when you smooth it down your strands. But, it won’t make your hair produce it’s own shine … at least not the hair that’s already grown out of your head;).

For this past weekend, I did get most things done as planned, except for running a new course as practice for a race in less than two weeks. I also bought the Dri-sweat cap and like it for when I wear mini-twists and work out at the gym. It’s not bulky and is perfect under hats especially during the winter. I think I will start to use it again; I forgot I had it!
