7/26/12 UPDATE: “I Found It Cheaper” has arrived! Click the hyperlink to visit the page and/or find it under the Home tab!
About a month ago, I received an e-mail from reader Polly:
Good morning, Shelli–
So, I was thinking…
At my job, when we purchase products online, we have a feature called “I found it cheaper.” When we shop online for office products & such and we find it cheaper with vendors other than the usual one our Purchasing Department uses, it helps them to renegotiate prices and contracts, etc. It got me thinking…
A lot of times, we will suggest products to other curlies/naturals and sometimes we will tell folks where we get our stuff…and for how much. But sometimes, the products can be found cheaper. For example, after reading so much about the Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose conditioner, I got online and looked for it. I believe some people said they got it at the VitaminShoppe.com. I found it at vitacost.com for less than the Vitamin Shoppe price.
So that gave me the “I Found it Cheaper” idea for Hairscapades. Maybe your readers would not only appreciate advice on what products to purchase, but we may be able to help one another save some money if we can get it cheaper. Maybe it could be a spot where we can share online discounts or coupons, too.
What do you think?
Well, I think that sounds like a pretty dang awesome idea Polly!! I’m all about making my dollar go as far as it can! Shoot, I cut open lotion bottles to get the last bit of product out of them! Waste not, want not is my motto! For reals!
Anywho, wanted to know what you all thought of the idea? If you think that it’s a good one, this is the plan.
- Comment on this post with products, hair tools, accessories, etc., that you would like to find cheaper. Tell us where you buy it/them now and for how much (you can approximate if you don’t know the exact price). If you haven’t bought it yet, but have been eyeing it somewhere, tell us where and the price. If you buy/find the product online, give us an idea of the S&H charges and advise if there are any shipping promotions/discounts (e.g. free shipping for orders over a certain amount, $1 shipping all the time, etc.).
- Once we have 5-10 items, I will start a stationary “I Found It Cheaper” page under the “Home” tab.
- Once the “I Found It Cheaper” page debuts, future suggestions and prices must be indicated in the comments on that page to be added.
- If you find a posted product at a better price, let us know in the comments on the page, and I’ll update it with the information.
- The page will be updated regularly as we find products at better prices or want to add new products to find the best deals.
So, what do you all think? I want to hear from you! Should we give it a whirl?
That’s a splendid idea. I can’t think of a hair product right now, only a book which I recently purchased from Walgreens.com for $16 versus Barnes and Noble’s cost of $25. Many times I shop around for better deals especially free shipping and the overall cost.

I’m in love with Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twist Butter. Its absolutely my HG for bantu knots, twists or Braid outs. So far, I’ve found it on her site and CurlMart for $16-18. Any suggestions?!?

Great idea! I’m in the UK so won’t be any help probably, but still!

I think this is a great idea. I actually just discovered vitacost.com yesterday and ordered AO GPB condish. It was cheaper on this site vs curlmart (curlmart was out of it anyway) and shipping is 4.99 regardless of how many items are in your order!

Aubrey has free shipping for orders over $40, I think, and Vitamin Shoppe for orders over $25. And VS has the Aubrey HSR and GPB conditioner in their stores too. That’s still the best price I’ve found, b/c there’s no shipping.

UPDATE: I ordered my GPB from vistacost.com on Thursday and it was at my doorstep on Saturday!!! Eventhough it said that I wouldn’t get it until the following Tuesday. AWESOME!
I live in the boonies so unfortunately no Vitamin Shoppe or whole foods stores here 😦 I’m stuck with ordering everything online. Thanks for the additional websites Shelly!!!

I think that’s a great idea! Unfortunately the only product that I absolutely must have is Hydrafusion by Ouidad and I haven’t been able to find that anywhere cheaper than Ulta ($26) when you factor in the cost of shipping and handling at other places.

Shelli I don’t have any products to add yet but this is a great idea! There are so many products that we mention that I have no idea where to find or how much they cost. Love the idea!

Definitely an AWESOME idea!!! In this economy I am all about saving pennies!!! As I am Naturally “I Found it Cheaper” at Walgreens. I used to buy it at Sally’s….Let’s just say whoa….$80.00 later I said it has to be a better way…So I decided to start purchasing them from Amazon..a little cheaper but, not a huge dent. Then I went on the As I Am Naturally website and they mentioned that their line is now available at Walgreens….#WHAT!!!…new tab…walgreens.com! Bam!!!!! Extremely Extremely cheaper….I instantly forwarded the print screen to my sister, my aunts and that’s all she wrote….
So ladies if you are a As I Am Naturally product user before you purchase your next Smoothing Gel or Twist Defining Jelly or my favorite can’t live without Coconut Cowash go to http://www.walgreens.com!
Happy Let’s Save Some Cash so we can spend it on some hair accessories Friday!!!!

As I AM……at Walgreens? What the What?!?!?! Seriously? Thanks soo much for this. I love their curling jelly and I hated ordering it online because the shipping charges was almost as much as the product itself.

Hey lady, I checked out the two sites (Sally’s and Walgreens) and it just seems that Sally’s sells the bigger jars. So, the price is the same for the same size containers (which appear to be 8 oz on Walgreens), but a little less than double for the 16 oz. containers. I’m adding the line and links to the page though! Thank you!
And, heads up, Walgreens has a sitewide 15% off coupon code right now, JULY15:

its a nice idea. Ppl would have to jump on stuff right away because most of the time things go cheaper when they are on sale. When I first bought the AO condish, I did see Vitacoast and it was cheaper when I bought it from the Vitamin Shop. I think the Vitamin Shop was having a sale at the time. Add the free shipping in and I went with the Vitamin Shop

Very good idea on the oils as well, like wheat germ oil and safflower, on ground, cheap somewhere?

Tip : I bought grapeseed oil (pompeian brand 24 oz.) and sunflower oil ( 33.8 oz.) at Walmart both for $3.88. They had the safflower oil too which I’m sure is the same price or comparable price. Try Walmart or a similar store and go in the aisles with your regular cooking oils. You’ll be surprised what hidden treasures you’ll find for your hair and skin. Personally, I use the grapeseed oil (antioxidant/vitamin E) for my hair and to stir fry with (lol). The safflower and sunflower oils are great for skin/DIY body butters and body scrubs. Hope this helps!

Haha! I would’ve never thought to look there (duh). Thanks for the info!

Ok, I just re-read my post and thought it could be taken wierd so to clarify, the “duh” is directed at me for not thinking to look on the COOKING OIL aisle for grapeseed or sunflower oil lol.

No need for clarification, I totally understood – hope others did too (lol). I only stumbled on the sunflower & grapeseed oils while searching for olive oil, so don’t feel bad. Coconut oil, the spectrum brand (organic) is there relatively cheap at Walmart too. Go get ’em everybody!

100% love this excellent idea. If anyone uses the ORS Repleneshing Conditioner, I found the professional size, (33.8 oz), for $9.99 at National Liquidators in West Hempstead, Long Island, in case you’re in the area.

This is such a brilliant idea. I love saving money so I will definitely support this segment of the blog.
I know a lot of people get their oils from Amazon. I love shopping on Amazon, but do not like paying shipping and handling. I must say that I have not paid S&H fees for the past couple of months. If you do a search on Amazon for a oil, for example Castor Oil, be sure not to just click and buy the first item on the list, look for stores that offer free shipping. That will save you a lot of money in the long run

I have been eyeing JBCO and Vatika Oil, among other Ayurvedic products at http://www.ayurnaturalbeauty.com/. JBCO is at least $2-$3 cheaper than any beauty supply or health food store that I’ve gone to. And I live in NYC where there are plenty. I am not sure of the shipping costs because I have not have placed an actual order yet. Also, they have henna and other Ayurvedic herbs.

This is a great idea!! I agree with Michelle people are going to have to jump right on the products because they will go fast. I would have to assume that if we find it cheaper it should be that price all the time and not just the sale price?

This is an excellent idea. I use the keracare naturals line. It is expensive so I was hesitant about trying it. Ten I discovered ensleybeautysupply.com. The whole line is about 50% cheaper than any salon you will find it in.Last time I saw it it was $75 but at ensley it is $44.95. They also have new 32 oz sizes of the cleansing cream, leave in condish and twist and define cream. The shipping is like $12 but the products are so much cheaper the shipping is not that bad.

Awesome ladies!! So much great feedback!!!! As there weren’t a lot of suggestions for products with which to begin, I’m going to start with my staples and a few that were on this list. Miche’al, the post will have regular prices, but I’ll put some type of suggestion to always check each site/location for sales before purchasing for the best deals. Also, as it’ll be a page, if things go on sale, people can add it to the comments as they learn about the sale and so that anyone in search of something at that time knows that the comments on the page may be a resource to check for current sales, just like people have posted sales here now! I LOVE it! So, I’m going to work on creating the full page this week!! Yea!! You guys rock:)!!

OK I should have told you this before. always always create your work in a plain text editor. Then copy it to WordPress. I’ve had this happen before and now I know better.

I don’t know what Plan Text editor is Michelle. I use Text Edit to put things I’m copying and pasting into “Plain Text” first. Is that what you mean?

yeah you do! You know the text program on your computer. type everything there. Then copy and past it into WordPress. That way you don’t lose your work should WP decide to act the fool. Don’t use a Microsoft Word though because it has html coding in the background and when you paste it into WordPress then it may not look the way you want it to.
