A Change of Part?

Standard

So, this is end of Day 4 hair. It’s been getting bigger every day and I’m so excited to have volume again!!

See what I mean?!?! Anyway, it’s gotten a little wild for work and I have a staff meeting, so it’ll probably be bunned when you’re reading this!

Anywho, the real point of this post is this. On Tuesday night, I learned that a thread was started on LHCF about my recent haircut! Kind of surreal! *lol* Anywho, everyone was very complimentary of the cut, but there were a couple of comments about my center part. Seems some aren’t a fan of it. The young lady who started the thread indicated that she was going to ask me to part it on the side. I’m a person who generally walks to the beat of her own drum and make aesthetic choices that please me, not necessarily others. However, I also try to be open-minded and receptive to constructive criticism. So, although I didn’t get the “formal” request, I decided to oblige the poster:)! After I got home from work from yesterday, I placed my ever expanding WnG in a side part and snapped a few pics. (Many of you may have seen these on FB already, but I know that I have a few readers who aren’t on that, so I have to share with them too!!;))

You know that I can’t see like this! *lol*

I received a lot of positive comments on the side-part pics here. And, you know, I kind of like it too!! I think that it does look more flattering here. But, the reason I generally part down the middle is because it hides my “bad” eyebrow and the way it’s parted above, it’s covering my “good side” and falls into my eye! *lol* But, you know, maybe I’ll just have to move outside of my comfort zone, break out the eyebrow pencil a little more often and grab a bobby pin or two so that I can wear a side part more often;). What say ye?

How do you prefer to part your hair? Do you mix it up from time to time?

  1. I see that most people on FB said ‘young’ where I said ‘fun’. LOL But this is what I meant. It looks young, fun, fresh, and flirty. I definitely like it. And you’re right, the cut has definitely boosted your volume. It looks so great.

    • Thanks Tiffany!! You don’t like the look of a bob? I love bobs:)! But, I can see where you’re coming from since your hair is cut in layers, it’s odd that it would look like a bob. But, I say, go with it! Your twist-out was looking super good!

    • Parting on the left feels really awkward to me. I thing it’s because I’m right handed, so parting on the left is uncomfortable to me and I think my hair doesn’t fall correctly that way (think I’ve tried it before). Like, it’s floppy and doesn’t hang/fall naturally that way.

  4. I like ’em all, especially side parts and I mix it up each week. I also liked your center part. You are a good sport for obliging the “request.” I, on the other hand, woulda released some expletives, thinking it’s my damn hair the whole time. That’s why you are the blogger, no? LOL

    • LOL!! I aim for diplomacy Ptt ;). If that’s not possible, then I remain silent. I am not a fan of nastiness in this natural hair space and life in general, so I work hard not to contribute to it. Mind you, in the past, there have been times that Wei has gotten an earful when I feel attacked. But, I always calm down and act civilly as I think it’s important not to play into negativity. Sometimes, diplomacy and kind words silence the antagonists, sometimes they keep going and that’s when I chose to say nothing. That really is the best way to end an argument;). Anywho, this was nothing like that, it wasn’t even as if it was posted on my blog. It was just an ambivalent observation and potential request, so I decided to give it a try.

  5. Oh I really love the side part. I don’t think I ever noticed your hair in a side part being out before. I usually see you with a center part or a little pompadour. This is a nice change 🙂

I typically do side parts but am starting to do center parts sometimes to switch it up. I just think my hair looks better parted on the side.

    • I did a side part when it was straight Michelle, but you’re right. I don’t think I’ve ever posted pics of it curly and parted to the side. I definitely like the little pompadour though :). Thanks!

Yeah, I see you wear it in various ways. I think the side part looks good on you!

  6. By all means do you first and foremost! I think it’s great that you have that attitude of wearing your hair the way YOU want to wear your hair and marching to the beat of your own drum! I honestly wish I had a little more of that myself. That said, I do think the side part looks really good on you. It does look fun and sassy.

    • Awwww, thank you Marii! I actually used to get that about “Joan” a lot:). In regard to smiling, I know, I know!! See, the thing is, I always look forced when I try to smile when taking a pic of myself! I try over and over again and always end up deleting those pics!! I just never look natural! And, the sad thing is, I’m ALWAYS smiling!!! I’ve been nicknamed “Sunshine” so many times, because I’m always cheesing! I’ll have to work on my modeling smile and try to get it right ;).

  8. I’m a side part girl myself, so I’m biased. It looks good on ya girl. Sidebar – you are so accommodating. I would give commenters /dissenters the side eye and keep it moving….I guess that’s why you’re the vlogger and I’m the subscriber :).

  9. If you feel that this part is covering your “good side” and showing your “bad side” would you not just change the part to the other side? I think you’re just resisting. Plus the side part makes your hair look fuller at the top.

  10. I like the side part, too, but pulled back a little at the top is one of my favorite looks for you. Honey please! You wanna talk about bad eyebrows? Mine up and left for parts unknown about two years ago! Bofubem! #teamwhoopi.

    • Thanks Kendis, Tabith and Tracy. Tracy, you too?!?! It’s an epidemic! LOL!! Pulled back in the little poof is also one of my favorite looks too Tracy!! I think that makes me look more youthful too:). Thank you! OMGosh … why am I just now really seeing what you put behind the #?!?!?!? “teamwhoopi!” LMBO!! Hysterical. Don’t you know, my dad doesn’t have any eyebrows either?!?! My entire life, his brow bone has looked JUST like Whoopi’s! But, I was a tween before I realized, “Daddy doesn’t have any eyebrows!”

      • I honestly don’t know how it happened, but I should own stock in MAC. Their Eyebrow pencil in Spiked is like an AmEx for me. I nevva, evva, evva leave home without it! Tell your father I am starting a support group called “Bald Faces Anonymous” if he wants to join. And don’t worry about the goatee, if there are any women in the group near or in menopause, some might have more chin hair than he does, so it’s okay!

  11. I love the side part! Its face flattering and youthful! The middle part is nice but this is icing on the cake! Your cut overall is the BUSINESS! I love it – the volume, the curls returning… It makes think about cutting mine now so I would like to know if anyone knows anybody in the MD area who cuts natural hair! I need a cut and although I am transitioning, I am not ready for the BC. I cut my daughter’s hair into layers last night and it turned out HAWT but I cannot cut my own hair in the same manner…. HELP!

    • Thanks Faye!! Yes, I am LOVING this cut!! I’m so excited to see the return of my curls!!! As to the salon in DC, wish I could help. Have you tried looking at the CurlyNikki forums? I think they have posts for salon recommendations. I really need to start a post to solicit recommendations for salons in every state!

  13. Awwww, thanks Zee:)! I’ll definitely have to try the side part more often seeing as how I always enjoy being told I look like I’m in my 20s rather than my actual age of 40!!!

As to being a good sport, I try :). I mean, I think all of us have the immediate reaction to get defensive when someone tells us they don’t like something about our appearance or our preferences. And, because I pride myself on doing what I want and not seeking the approval of others, I had that initial desire to rebel. However, after those visceral reactions passed, I thought, “You know what, I’ll give it a try! What’s the harm?” And, I do like it parted to the side. I doubt that I’ll entirely give up my center part (thank you to all the sweeties who said it looks nice any way I wear it! You are peaches!!!:), but I’ll mix it up more often.

  14. I love your hair regardless, but the side part is a nice change. I can’t wait until my hair is long enough to wear a center part (w/o me looking extra crazy).

    • Thanks FLK!! I’ve been playing around with it more :). I’ve realized that it works better when I set/style my hair from a center part, then flip it once dry. I think that is why I often didn’t like it. When I try styling it from the side and it’s wet, it is floppy, with no volume. Styling, drying then flipping gives the nice lift to it.
