GOC Contender #15: Etoile

Etoile is back for Round Two too!!

Name: Etoile

Greetings all. This is my second time participating in The Hairscapades GOC! I had such a ball during the first challenge and I am soo excited to be a participant in GOC II! Yeah!

I’m a rain maker by day, amateur chef by night, lover of all things pink and certified-card-carrying-don’t-try-this-at-home-kids product junkie!

My go-to style is my Wash N’ Go. I’ve tried a few other styles, but I truly am a no fuss, no muss kinda gal … WnG, afro puff or bun.

  • Pre-Poo overnight with olive oil, jojoba oil or Treasured Locks Argan Oil.
  • Wet my hair under the shower stream and apply either HEHH or Pantene Nature Fusion Moisture Balance Conditioner, then finger detangle (following the condition, shampoo, condition method).
  • Shampoo with Doris New York Reconstructor Shampoo. (Note: For spring/summer, I plan to wash every 2 weeks but to co-wash every 5 days with HEHH or Aussie Moist.)
  • Detangle in the shower with HEHH Conditioner or Pantene Nature Fusion Moisture Balance Conditioner
  • Step out of the shower and deep condition my hair with Doris New York Mud Minerals Pack, Blended Beauty Herbal Reconditioner or Organix Hydrating Macadamia Oil Intensive Moisture Mask.
  • Sit under heating cap for 30-60 minutes. (Note: For spring/summer I plan to deep condition every other co-wash and always on my shampoo day.)
  • Aply leave-in conditioner to freshly rinsed and damp hair, either Doris New York Leave-In Conditioner, Kinky Kurly Knot Today or My Modified Kimmaytube LIC Recipe (I substitute olive oil for the castor oil).
  • Apply Doris New York Olive Oil Cream to seal and add additional moisture and sheen.

*Note: Starting June 1, I will go back to the Tightly Curly method and style with conditioner only, using either Aussie Moist or Blended Beauty Curl Styling Butter.

I am planning to book an appointment at the top of May to see the curl whisperer herself, Tameeka of Jaded Tresses  for a trim and my summer highlights.

Health & Fitness
On April 1, I am going to start a 30 day raw food cleanse. I do this cleanse periodically and it works well to help me shed pounds and detox.

  • Breakfast: Raw Fruit
  • Lunch and Dinner: Salad with lots of fresh, raw veggies (broccoli, carrots, asparagus, avocado, radishes, peppers, etc.) dressed with balsamic vinegar/olive oil or lemon juice.
  • Snacks: Raw nuts and raw fruit
  • Kickboxing 2-3 days a week
  • Walk/run 1-2 days a week
  • Walk a minimum of 1 mile a day

GOC Contender #14: Mershauna

The returning GOCers are in the house!! This is truly a sequel ;)!

Name: Mershauna

Wow so much has happened this month, it’s crazy. I just turned 22 on March 26th, I went to a dance festival and met an AMAZING woman who changed my perception of myself as a dancer and I got another tattoo! I also straightened my hair. I’d say I’ve had some decent growth.

Not much has changed since the last update as far as regimen and whatnot. I have to say that I am really proud of myself with how my fitness journey is going. I have maintained going to the gym at least 4-5 times a week and I’m really trying to improve my technique with dance. As far as the condition of my body, I want to change my diet. I’m hoping to have a mostly raw vegan diet with a cheat every one or two weeks. I’m starting to realize that health is very important to me.

I’m really looking forward to continuing this GOC. The updates keep me honest and I can see my actual progress :).

GOC Contender #13 & 13.5: Michelle and Chloe

Screeeeeeeeeeeeech!!!! Hold up!! We have a last minute contender throwing her hair in the ring!!! Check out the “Edited to Add” udpate!!

Name: Michelle aka CurlyChellz aka Chloe’s mom

Goals: My hair goal is to maintain healthy hair and my length goal is BSL (Bra Strap Length). I am currently grazing APL (Arm Pit Length). Hmmmmmm, my ultimate weight goal is to be between 135-140lbs. I am currently 166 lbs. So, my realistic weight loss goal will be to lose 15 lbs for the challenge.

My ultimate regimen goal is to scale down and streamline the products I use on my hair. My planned routine will be to develop a consistent one.

  • I currently henna once a month, but will move to henna glosses (using Shelli’s detailed steps) with just the roots and begin adding henna to my edges (I have one gray hair at both my temples and the orange/red henna just accentuates them against my dark tresses … lol).
  • I will also begin to wash my hair with theTerressentials Lavender Mud Wash once a month using Naptural85’s method.
  • I also want to incorporate more protective styles into my hairstyle rotation, butWnG’s will most likely be my staple since it will be “summer, summer time.”

Health & Fitness

  • My weight loss routine will be to eat cleaner foods, incorporate more veggies (raw) into my meals, to juice my morning meal and eat healthy portioned meals for the other two.
  • I will also resume my Zumba classes at least once a week, as well as waking up my Mii character on the Wii to do 30 minutes (minimum) of Just Dance 3 or Wii Fit 3-5 days a week with Chloe.
  • I would like to also start weight training, but we’ll see with that.
  • Last, stay prayed up for motivation, perseverance and patience.

Reward: Ok, since I have three goals (yes I’m counting the weight loss as two goals, because I have to change my eating and exercise – see TWO, I should have three rewards, right?), first will be to get family pictures done. Hopefully I’ll be lighter, leaner and have lusher locks. Second will be a few pairs of new shoes, because with my weight loss, my feet will go back to the 7 ½-8’s they were before my weight gain. Third, will be to continue my new healthy lifestyle (includes my hair)!

GOC Contender #13.5: Chloe

Name: Chloe

Goal: As I stated in her mini-hairscapader story, Chloe naturally has layers in her hair. So the front, sides and back have never been one length. That is my goal, to get her hair to a more uniform length. Chloe is at mid-back length now after a cut in March (she took off about 1 1/2-2inches). Her sides are about armpit length and the front is shoulder length, but these are not consistent.  So, I’m working on maintaining her healthy hair and for length I want armpit length in the front and sides.

  • Wash hair with the Terressentials Mud Wash (TMW) Lavender flavor (why is it a flavor???) once a month.  The wash will be diluted to stretch the pricey product. We’ve washed once with it and I LOVE IT!  Remember the baby doll strand feel when you first begin to use henna??? Well, the initial tacky/gummy feel you get when you apply the wash goes away once you rinse and the strands feels so soft and detangling is NIL (*jumping for joy*).
  • So on a weekly basis, ok let’s be real, probably will be twice a month, co-wash with Organix Coconut Milk Condish or Tressemme Flawless Curls Condish (I picked this up when I couldn’t find the Tressemee Naturals Condish-not bad).
  • For time’s sake and my convenience, but much to Chloe’s chagrin, her hair will rarely be out. After the TMW, I twisted her hair using the, “twist the opposite way you would normally for fatter twists” method. And, I don’t know if it was the wash or the technique, but her twists (about 20) were PLUMP, SOFT and stayed twisted without a rubberband on the ends. So, we will be rocking twists and, in a pinch, a huge curly pony with a cute bow and out the door.
  • I will also be working on my cornrowing skills (cuz I have NONE), so when the pool opens, I can throw two in her head and then throw her in the pool.

Reward: Will be another blow-out (she was so stoked-her hair has never been that straight), a mommy and me mani/pedi and an afternoon at Sephora (her fave place in the mall).

GOC Contender #12: Krystal

And here’s Krystal, back for Round Two of the GOC!

Name: Krystal

I’m so ready for Round Two!!!

My hair is halfway between shoulder length (SL) and arm pit length (APL). My GOC goal is to reach APL by the end of this GOC and I’m confident that I will reach my goal. I think my hair was just barely shoulder length when we started round 1 of the GOC and I have no reason to believe that I will not achieve that same amount of growth in the next 6 months.

Health & Fitness
Now that I’m 100% healthy, I’m looking forward to reaching and maintaining my weight loss goals. I’ve been hovering around 150 lbs for a while. My goal is to get down to between 140-145 lbs. I think it’s quite doable as I have incorporated juicing into my diet as a meal replacement and my foot has healed up nicely. I ran my first half marathon in late March since 2009. I’m also looking to make permanent changes to how I eat as I have a really bad sweet tooth that needs to be curbed. This is a time of discipline and new habit formation for me.

Hair Regimen:
Not much has changed since my last update. I still use Terressential Mud Wash to clean my hair and my hair still loves it. In between mud wash cleanses, I co-wash with whatever is in my shower (DevaCurl One Condition or Herbal Essence Hello Hydration) and seal with almond oil or mango butter. While I haven’t done a henna treatment in 6 weeks, I plan to work it into my schedule soon, because I’m overdue :-(.

One new addition to my regimen isn’t a hair product, but a new shower head. I purchased a shower head that filters out chlorine and other things that my hair and skin hate. It took a few weeks to notice, but my skin is loving the change. I went to work the other today without putting on lotion and my skin wasn’t ashy. I would never have made it through the day without lotion using a regular shower head. I can only imagine how my hair will react in the long-term.

My biggest challenge is that I still need to add more hair styles to my repertoire and figure out how to best work with my fine-textured hair. Instead of thinking of it as styles that I can’t do, I think of it as styles that I haven’t yet discovered; gotta keep it positive. I’ll be posting more videos to my YT channel as soon as I perfect a few more styles.

That’s a euphemism for procrastinating … because I still haven’t washed my hair! I know, right? OMGosh … well, it’s because of my goal to get 5 GOC posts up every day! I hope that you are enjoying our participant entries as much as I am! I love to read them and, of course, look at the pics (in fact, that’s what I always do first … scroll past the write-ups to the pics! LOL!!)! There are so many beautiful and sweet women with great energy. I hope that you find their stories and journeys inspirational and motivating! Please comment and rate when you can to show them your support! I know commenting is a PAIN from a mobile device (frickin’ long a@#% Captchas! *lol*), but rating, liking or sharing takes a single click (I think ;))!. I know that they will really appreciate your feedback, because it helps to keep you going when you know someone is rooting for you :). “And that’s all I have to say about that.” *lol*

In regard to my dirty hair, I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it for work. But, last night I had to do something, because it was feeling dry and crunchy! Though the mix of fake Infusium, aloe vera juice and jojoba oil really helped pump of the volume of my twist out, I think the aloe also leaves my hair dry after a day when used with a watery leave-in. So, I did some temporary remediation by heavily moisturizing and sealing.

I whipped out the Qhemet Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee, which has been pretty blah for me and I went to town! The jar is almost done and I won’t be re-upping as I wasn’t really impressed with it. It worked fine, just nothing for me to write  home about. Since it’s neither locally available (meaning, within a 15-20 minute drive) nor cheap, I won’t be repurchasing. I am interested in trying one of their other butters though. I just can’t remember which one someone recommended to me since my hair is fine and easily weighed down. I think it was the Burdock Root. We’ll see.

So, after heavily moisturizing my hair with the water-based Cocoa Tree DG, I applied jojoba oil to seal, because I wasn’t able to get my hands on my JBCO! My little repurposed bottles were all empty and I really thought I had run out of it! I was like, “What the frick?! How did I let myself run out of JBCO?” But, I didn’t. After I applied the jojoba oil, I started digging under my sink and found a half-filled bottle. But, definitely have to hit the BSS to stock up … I’ll buy 3 or 4 bottles as I have to get it from a store that is out of my way and about 30 minutes from my house. And, for JBCO? I’ll travel, because that is definitely one of my holy grails!

Now, in regard to this dirty mop? I think I’m just going to wait until Friday night to wash my hair … well, if it isn’t a mess when I figure out what to do with it today. Who am I fooling? It’ll probably be in a bun. Anywho, Wei and I are getting our families together for the first time on Saturday!! Our best friends are also coming!! So, I want fresh hair and figure that I might as well just wait until Friday to wash it now. I think I’ll actually do a TnC for the first time since January!! I could really use a henna/indigo treatment too, but I’m not making any promises about that one!

Okay! That’s it! Hope that you enjoy all of the GOC Contender posts today!!

Lata Gatas!!

How do you “stretch” your style/hair when you don’t have the time, desire and/or energy for wash day?

Fatemeh’s Jewelry & Accessories Discount!

So, right around the time that I started the Hairscapades Facebook page, I “met” Fatemeh, the artisan behind Fatemeh’s Jewelry & Accessories. I loved her peacock earrings and crochet hats so much that I sent her a message about possibly doing a collabo. Well, that irksome “Other” Messages FB folder tried to stand in the way of progress. But now, many months later, FB’s nefarious plot has been foiled!!

by Fatemeh’s Jewelry & Accessories

I started making jewelry in the summer of 2010. I am an advanced crocheter and, for some reason, got tired of making coats and sweaters. I sat down one day and started making jewelry. A box of items were just sitting on the floor, so my sister suggested that I sell them. That’s where Fatemeh’s Jewelry & Accessories started.

I make crochet and beaded jewelry and hair accessories. Every item you see is made by hand. Every bead is strung, every wire is wrapped, every fabric is cut and yarn is crocheted. I want people to walk around with an item that no one else has. So, my jewelry is one of a kind. You will not see any two pieces alike. But, items can be duplicated upon request. Look in the “Sold” section of my shop.

I am very meticulous. If I don’t like a finished product (crochet or jewelry), I will take it apart. I have taken apart whole crochet sweaters. People think I’m crazy for doing that. If I don’t like how an item looks, it will not be sold or given away.

I also do custom orders … YOU create a one of a kind piece.

You can browse and buy items from my Etsy shop at www.etsy.com/shop/fnggrant. You can also find me on Facebook where I post new items for sale and giveaways: Fatemeh’s Jewelry & Accessories Facebook Page.

GOC Contender #11: Connie

Name: Connie.

Goal: I did the big chop in April of 2010, so it’ll be 2 years of growth for me soon. My current length is 8″ on the sides, 7 3/4″ in the back and 8.5″ in the top crown. My goal is BSL by the end of this challenge. Health & Fitness – Unfortunately I don’t have any fitness goals at he moment. Hopefully, I will change this soon as I need to work-out.

It’s been a lot of trial and error and products. But, I think that I’ve finally found my regimen and staples. My go-to style is a wash & go. I follow Mahogany Curls and the Curly Method.

  • I deep condition weekly, co-wash weekly, and no-poo once a month.
  • I oil just about every night (give or take a day here or there).
  • I deep condition on Friday’s overnight using melted shea butter mixed with whatever conditioner I have. I apply the conditioner to unwashed hair that is spritzed with a little water. I wear a plastic cap over the conditioner along with a scarf. In the morning, I spritz a little more water on my hair and sit under the steamer for 20-30 minutes.
  • After deep conditioning, I co-wash in the shower (under a filter) with DevaCurl One Condition in four sections. After applying the conditioner to all four sections, I go back to the first section, split it in half, and finger detangle. I rinse each section after finger detangling to remove the dirt, then go back and add more One Condition that will remain in my hair as my leave-in.
  • Sometime I’ll add DevaCurl AnGel for hold. Sometimes I don’t bother adding gel at all. If I do add gel, I do it in the shower right after adding the conditioner.
  • I let my hair air dry (I do not touch my hair anymore after I add the leave-in). It usually takes all day to dry. Once it’s 98% dry, I’ll scrunch in my oil mix to get rid of any crunch I have and to loosen up my curls. My oil mix is Jamaican black castor oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and Vatika Oil. I also use Nyle Oil alone, so I’ll alternate my oil mix with the Nyle Oil nightly before pineappling.
  • I apply 2 pineapples nightly, one in the back and one on top, and wear my Sue Maesta Hooded Band over my hair.
  • In the morning, I lightly spritz my hair with plain distilled water before I shake and go.
  • Once a month, I do the same routine, but instead of co-washing, I use DevaCurl No Poo to wash my hair and I detangle using my Denman.
  • I have been hennaing once a month, but I will no longer do so. I did my last henna treatment in February 2012. I also colored my hair using Manic Panic “Vampire Red” last weekend and liked the results, so I think I’ll do this a few more times to see my color results.

Reward: My reward after this challenge is to be able to BUN!!! I want a big, colossal, thick bun that I don’t have to do much manipilating to in order to wear daily. That will be my new go-to style.

Happy GOC!
