The Big 4-0

Standard

*Sigh* You know, it’s been a stressful couple of weeks and my hair has pretty much been the last thing on my mind. I’ve just been so fatigued and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the demands of life. Nothing earth-shattering, just work, family, home and the blog. Nothing to complain about really as I don’t have the biggest demand of all: kids!! But, you know, complain I will;). Anyway, that’s why I haven’t posted as much in the last couple of weeks. I just haven’t been able to get my brain to function enough recently to write, edit and/or experiment with my hair and products too much. Plus, I’ve been feeling under the weather the last couple of days, so that really didn’t help the end of this week.

Anyway, I know that a big part of my lackluster mood and increased stress levels is that I’ve allowed my healthy eating habits and exercise regimen to fly out the window since the end of my 28 Day Project Scale Down. My body has been revolting against the massive amount of cheese and refined carbs in my diet, as well as the lack of activity, by dunning me with aches and pains. Exercising and eating well contributes to my overall sense of well-being, accomplishment and self-image. Plus, I just feel so much better, have more energy and am able to work with greater focus and efficiency.

That being said, it’s time to light that fire again. Forty is looking me dead in the eye and I plan to be Fit & Fabulous in my Forties;). In addition, I have a beach vacation and our second annual Rugged Maniac in July to motivate me. So, look out ladies, Project Scale Down is back in effect! I have 10 pounds to lose and I plan to start with another 28 Day Workout Challenge, exercising for at least 20 minutes a day and posting when I’m done on our Facebook page here (feel free to join in the fun!).

In regard to nutrition, I’m getting back on my normal regimen and think I may also try having a green smoothie for the first couple of weeks to boost my energy and nutrient levels. Think I’ll try the following Green Smoothie recipe I saw in the article, 5 Nutrients for Healthy Hair Growth in One Smoothie, on BGLH earlier this week.

via BlackGirlLongHair.com

1 cup of almond milk (Provides Protein, Potassium & Zinc minerals)
1 Organic Banana (Provides Vitamin A, B, C, E & Iron minerals)
1 Handful of Spinach (Provides Fiber, Protein and Cancer-fighting Antioxidants)
1 Handful of Kale (Provides Vitamin A, C, K, & Sulfur for Detoxification)
1 Tablespoon of Flax Seeds or Chia Seeds (Provides Omega-3 Fatty Acids)
1 Organic Pear (Provides Calcium & Fiber)
½ Cup of Ice

Sounds good and energizing to me! I hope! I feel like I can commit to a smoothie over juicing as the blending and clean-up are easier and quicker. We’ll see. Fortunately, Wei is feeling just as motivated as me, so I think that I’ll have a partner in crime ;).

So, that’s it. Just wanted to tell you guys what was up with my posting frequency as of late and give an update on the health and fitness front. Time to get it in!!

(p.s. But, I’m still having buttercream on the big day next week!! Frick! I can’t believe it! 40!! That ish warrants cake ;). *lol*)

  2. I didn’t realize you were a fellow Pisces! YAY! You and Wei make 40 seem awesome, Shelli. I’m certainly down for the fitness challenge. I tend to get in these fitness grinds where I go, go, go, followed by little weird slumps where I workout 2 or maybe 3 times a week. Womp. lol. Happy almost your Bday! You a great year to look forward to:)

    • Thanks LaShelle!! Where are you going in Africa? I LOVED those twists … like seriously LOVED. But, the take down was a nightmare … it was so rough. So, definitely think about how you want them started and prepare for a long and patient removal process. I hope that maybe you just won’t have the problems that I did!

Mimi, thank you!! Me too! I should have been right AT 40 given all the work I put in last year to get back down to 120. I wish I could stop doing this 10 pound yo-yo thing!!

Kaee, I WISH I was doing 2-3 days a week. I haven’t done ANYTHING since the end of January. Ridiculous:(. Bad Shelli, bad!! *lol* And thank you lady:)!!

  3. OMG I feel you Shelli! I let the four months of cal counting and healthy eating go down the drain in the last few weeks that resulted in a 6 lbs weight gain! Ugh im so mad at myself for letting go with my wedding only months away… I gotta get back on my grind! I’ll blame my appetite on the two antibiotics I had to take for my respiratory infection…(excuses excuses lol!!) And honey BLACK DONT CRACK because you dont look a day over 25!!

    • Yeah Christabel! Today is going to be day one! I need to get off of this computer, mix some Zizyphus and then hit the basement for Cardio Axe. Gonna ease myself back in;). I think I might do Abs of Steel first then Cardio Axe.

And thanks Lauren and Cocoberrie!! Lauren, the Rugged Maniac was definitely tough and super muddy, but it was a lot of fun to do with a group! Our only goal was to finish … okay, I lie. It was to finish and beat each other!! That is, I was trying to beat my sister and she was trying to beat me. She achieved her goal:(. Womp, womp. LOL!!

  5. Ok, now I definitely didn’t know that you are about to be 40yrs old. You will definitely have to be in preggos soon lol, because I thought you were around 35. Oh by the way, the henna that I saw on Curlynikki turned out gorgeous.

  6. Fab Forty is the best!!! Especially when you don’t look it at all. ; ) My exercise game has gone to crap. I can only do videos so much. My favorite is to be outside and running. I have to get it together myself with summer rearing around the corner. I just bought a juicer after reading so much on juicing and the wonderful benefits it yields. One recipe I have tried recently is: 1 handful of fresh spinach, 1c of frozen mango, 1 banana, 1c of water, and the juice from half of a squeezed lemon. I loved and to my surprise so did my daughter, she wanted to finish mine. I going to take part in this 28 day thing and see if it works for me, hopefully. I love the whole idea of the Rugged Maniac. I don’t know if I could complete it, but the challenge is worth it.

  8. Wonderful. I too have been making green juice to drink in the morning after my workout. I have 10 lbs that I haven’t been able to shake since being sick for the past 6 weeks. It’s been a long hard road and I’m getting back out there. Can’t wait for more project scale downs posts.

    • Thanks everybody!! I was about to say that I definitely don’t feel 40 … but, I guess it’s more like I don’t feel like 10 years have passed since I was 30!! College seems like a few years ago!! Time just moves faster and faster! Now, to just get myself back in shape and down these few pounds!! I will say this, although working out isn’t as easy as it was last summer, it isn’t as hard as it was last January when I resumed working out after a year and a half of sloth! Won’t/can’t let that happen again!!

Do you think soy milk can be used in place of the almond milk?

    Like

    • Thanks Shahidah!! In regard to the soy milk, I’m sure you can. I think the poster recommended almond milk though because it has fewer calories and fat and doesn’t have the issues that have been reported with soy milk. But, think you could probably use any milk that you prefer, rice, soy, regular.
