A Make-Up Haul: It’s HER Fault!

I decided not to wash my hair this weekend as I didn’t exercise that much this week. If I’m sweating a lot, I’ll wash it weekly, if I’m not, they I’ll try to go two weeks. Now, the thing is, I did hot yoga on Sunday and plan on going again tonight. So, I expect a wash night may have to be in my immediate future.

So, what to do with the hair then? On Saturday, I broke out the ol’ trusty banana clip and put my hair into my “go to” style, a big, high bun. However, on Sunday, I decided I wanted to try a Chinese Bun, like the one below, but on my own hair.

I knew that it would be not be anywhere as big or fabulous as  the one I do with added braiding hair. However, I thought I might have gained enough length to wrap the braids securely around the hair stick and make a decent bun. And, ya know, it turned out okay!

With flash, so that you can see it a little better.

So, I’m going to try to leave it alone and in this bun for the next couple of days (I’ll remove the sticks and let the braids hang for bed at night). I’m really hoping that I can get away with not washing it until late in the week as I am planning on doing my first ever Two Step ApHogee treatment the next time I wash. Any advice on making the process less scary and as pleasant as possible? I hear the smell is ghastly, but I’m not sure if I want to mix it with another conditioner at this point. Anyone ever try adding an essential oil? I wonder if that might make the smell even worse?!? Anywho, I plan to shampoo with a diluted sulfate shampoo (my normal iOn Curls shampoo) to make certain that my hair is very clean of product build-up so that the protein can “stick.” I also plan to deep condition, post treatment, with Darcy Botanicals Pumpkin Seed Conditioner.

In other news, I’m blaming Sham I Am Glam for fanning the flames of my inner PJ in a different direction this week. Girl had me looking everywhere for a couple of Wet & Wild palettes as I LOVED the looks she created with them. I hit Harmon, CVS and finally where I knew that I should have started, K-Mart (which is right near my house), to find the Vanity and Lust eyeshadow palettes (far left and right respectively). Now Sham is a masterful eyeshadow artist. If you love make-up and haven’t checked her out, you should!. She does the most FABU eye looks. However, her brown smoky eye and  New Year’s Eve FOTD (Face of the Day … yeah, took me several weeks to figure that one out!) are the ones I want to try to replicate as they aren’t too far outside of my comfort zone.

You see, I barely wear make-up. When I do wear it, I tend to keep it pretty neutral with a bronzer for eyes and cheeks, groomed brows and lip gloss. If I’m feeling fancy or have a special event, I might add purple shadow, a little eyeliner, mascara and lipstick. Anywho, despite my bare minimum make-up ways (I’ve had the same Black Radiance bronzer for at least 8 years), why did I end up with a blush, another eyeshadow palette, two glosses and a lipstick too? Oh yeah, and last week, on a run to Harmon for medicine for Wei, I ended up with the NYX eyebrow powder/wax set (I’m showing off my handy-work in the pics above 😉 … I’ve always used a pencil, so this was different). So yeah, I got a whole bunch of make-up that I’ll probably have 10 years from now as I don’t wear it often! But, I’ll do a little experimenting in the next couple of weeks. If I don’t look like a clown, maybe I’ll even share my results with you guys:).

A closer look.

In regard to the glosses, I figured while I was in a make-up buying mood, I’d try to restock on a mocha colored NYC (New York Color) gloss that I got, like, forever ago. I love the way it looks sheer/clear, but actually has a hint of color that gives my lips a smooth, uniform tone (I’m wearing it in the Chinese Bun pics above). The tube is running precariously low, so this was a good time to look for it as I originally got it from a K-Mart. Alas, I did not find it there yesterday. But, I did pick up an NYC Lip Plumper in Toffee Kiss, a Lip Shine in Honey on the Hudson and a Maybelline COLORsensational lipstick in Bean There. I figured at least one of them would work. Well, surprise, surprise, I like them all! I took photos of the Toffee Kiss and Bean There. They are both barely-there color, but that’s the way I like it for my “day look.”

Maybelline Bean There

NYC Toffee Kiss (it tingles)

I know, there isn’t much of a difference, but that just means I don’t have to buy gloss or lipstick for a while now as I’m stocked for decades!! *lol*

So, those were my weekend shennanigans. Who else had a PJ incident this past week(end)? What goodies did you get?

  1. It’s funny because I was planning on doing Aphogee treatment my next shampoo, because of some extra shedding. Great makeup finds. Oh Sham’s makeup look is very pretty. I wish I was that skillful at the application of makeup. I have mastered the skill of the eyeliner.

  2. I don’t wear much make up but I would like some concealer for my dark circles and nice lip gloss for a pop of color. Looking forward to your make up debut. Your skin is flawless is it the water and exercise or have you always had clear skin and the water and exercise is a bonus?

    • Nadia, no, not always! I went through those 30s break-outs and went to a dermatologist. I use Cleania face wash and Duac spot treatment daily and that seems to keep me straight. I’m planning on doing a post shortly about my experience with OCM (Oil Cleansing Method). Let’s just say, not good. I still have residual scars from it on my forehead and the bridge of my nose … If I posted a a close-up shot, you’d see them. Took a long time for my skin to recover from the breakouts I experienced post OCM. Although I went back to my Rxs, it took months before I stopped getting those hard sebaceous pimples which inevitably caused scars, regardless of whether popped or not :(! I know, “Ewwwww!” LOL! Anywho, my skin has been clear of new blemishes for a while now and I definitely think water and exercise help with the tone and “brightness” of my skin.

      • Thanks for responding to my question, I forgot to to check your response. It’s funny you mention 30’s acne I’m experiencing that. I have always had acne, but moderately. However when your 31 it’s annoying, its like enough already. When I was pregnant though had great skin. Was also debating doing the OCM method but scared of the side effects. When I lived in NJ I had a Dermatolgist in NYC who gave me Duac and something else which was $$ and then I got pregnant. I remember being so annoyed that I spent that money on the Rx and had to throw it away. But it did work. I might stick to Rhassoul clay.

  3. GUILTY AS CHARGES *hangs head in shame* LOL!

I’m so excited that you’re trying the WNW Color Icon palettes! They’re ridiculous quality for drugstore makeup.

    • Yoooooooouuuuuu! *pointing finger*!!!!!! LOL! I can’t wait to try them either Sham!! I’m definitely keeping your advice about not pulling the color too high in mind when I try it this go around.

  4. Do you really wax your own eyebrows? ? They look really nice. I wouldn’t have the courage to do it myself. If you do them yourself, I would love to see a tutorial.

    • Thanks Lieinbk! No, I don’t wax, I pluck, always have. As I tend to pluck stray hairs on a regular, I rarely have to re-shape … only if I’m trying to thicken the look or, for some reason, have gone a month without cleaning them up.

  5. Those are nice products. Just curious have you tried Black Radiance lipsticks yet, I recently brought some this week and they are gorgeous. Plus their cheap at 1.88 to 1.99 found at Walmart and Cvs,Walgreens. I want to try next is the Milani blushes/bronzer products.

    • Zyaran, no, I haven’t tried any of the Black Radiance lipsticks! I may have if I could have found the line in CVS or K-Mart. Neither had BR, and I looked hard because Sham uses a blush from them … Sham strikes again;)! They did have Milani, but I did enough damage this month for someone who barely wears make-up;).

  6. Yes, lets allllll blame Sham!! I have been stalking her page since you first mentioned her awhile back and my make-up collection has doubled. I like wearing make-up, I just didn’t know how to apply it properly without looking like BOZO. Sham has helped a lot and also has show ways to mix colors. Thanks ladies!!!

  7. Hey! I am a newbie to your blog and I love love it! I will not even go over to Sham because I have been doing lot of make-up pjing lately. I am new to the make-up game 🙂 I did buy another Revlon lipstick this weekend, Black Cherry, going to mix it with this ELF color with hopes of a understated plum lip!! I also got some green eyeliner. I find make-up more fun than buying new hair stuff! I like the NYC Toffe Kiss, did it stay for a decent amount of time??

    • Awwwww, thank you Marcia!!! And LOL @ not even going to Sham’s site, because girl, she’ll have you up in the drugstore make-up aisle!! LOL!! As to the NYC Toffee Kiss, I don’t even know if it stayed a decent amount of time!! What’s decent?? LOL!! I put it on at night, so I wiped it off to go to bed … so not really sure of how long I had it on. Then, the next day, I thought I put it on to wear to work, but think I used another gloss by accident! LOL!! Also, I usually have a cup of coffee in the morning and drink water, so everything comes off after a little of that!

  8. I wasn’t a pj junkie until after I had my baby now I’m obsessed with natural baby hair products….I need to get back into wearing makeup I will be brave & check out Sham’s website

  9. Oh my goodness, every time I go to Shams page I’m trying to figure out what make up to buy next! Bad Sham! LOL. As far as PJ goes I just ordered the Anita Grant Rhassoul Clay cubes (YAAAAAY!). They should be here in a few weeks. I. Can’t. Wait. 🙂

The colors you got look nice. Here’s to being natural and fabulous! 🙂

  10. Love the chinese bun; super cute.
&To answer you question, i have a PJ moment every weekend. It’s ridiculous. As far as makeup, i bought a new primer (SmashBox) and an eyeshadow palette (Shany 96 colors and it’s awesome!). I also found some Aubrey Organic conditioners that i haven’t used b4 & they were on sale.. so yeah, i bought some of those too..

    • Thanks Toya! I think Sham has that Shany 96 too … or, maybe it was my old NC.com blogging friend, Trisha?! One of them (or maybe both?) has it and love it! That would be a waste on me, but those of you who know how to work it? I’m impressed!!

Do you like the Aubrey Organics line? I’ve yet to try anything in it, but a lot of people seem to love and swear by it.

      • Ive only used the Honeysuckle Rose conditioner so far but its awesome! I used it as a deep conditioner and theres no slip, but It left my hair so soft.. it also helped define my curls. So yay for me, its a keeper :)!

  11. Excited for your upcoming protein treatment, Shelli 🙂 I thought you did the Two-Step ApHogee treatment a couple months ago? Or was that the 2 Minute Keratin Reconstructor, like M just used? Anywho, I posted about my first experience with the Two-Step Treatment here: http://forhisglorynatural.blogspot.com/2011/12/first-real-protein-treatment.html
Since I wasn’t sure how well it was going to work, I only bought the sample packs. The smell really is yucky – reminded me of a kennel, actually! :/ But it was worth it. Can’t wait to read about your results!

    • Hey Lauren, yeah, I only used the 2 minute Keratin Reconstructor. I bought the one application pack too to see how it works out for me. I read your post a while back;). So, excited about the good review … but not feeling that it’ll smell nasty:(. I’m a little nervous about the hardening and the danger, but I just know I have to make certain I have plenty of time to be patient, slow and gentle! I see such a difference in shedding and the feel of my hair since I started using the 2 minute, but I still see little strands breaking here and there. So, hoping this will stop the breakage entirely and happy that I’ve learned how to incorporate protein into my regimen the right way! I feel like I might see even greater improvements in my hair’s thickness and length retention with this step added every 6-8 weeks!!
