El Diablo


I used to LOVE Recess! It was a great cartoon, cleverly using the playground as a vehicle for satire or an allegory for life. Not many cartoons, which appeal to an older than pre-school age audience, seem to teach life lessons anymore. Anywho, this was one of my favorite episodes ever!

“Safety Man!! Come back Safety Man!! School isn’t over yet!!”

(p.s. If you were a fan of the show, I used to work with a woman who looked just like Miss Finster! It was hee-larious!)

September Update: hair – bsl; weight – 134 lbs

As far as crazy goes, August has nothing on September. The seniors at school are doing their BFAs, which ia like a capstone project where they showcase their choreography in an informal concert setting. I was cast in 3 pieces, so rehearsals have been crazy … like 5 days a week crazy. I flat-ironed my hair this month also and since my choreographer wanted my hair straight, I had to keep it that way longer than i intended. John Frieda had my back though. I trimmed maybe a little over an inch off all my hair. That was greatly needed in my opinion. I had a lot of splits and knots, thanks to summer. I probably would have cut more if my BF didn’t beg me to put the scissors away *lol*. I’ve been in strictly protective styles since I’m dancing. It’s just easier.

On the fitness front, I’ve notice myself get stronger in class. I’m getting my beastly calves back! The other day, a classmate complimented me on my arms … that made my entire week. Getting back into the gym. I’m focusing on toning and strengthening more so than losing weight. I figure that will come with the rest. I’m also eating healthy and drinking ridiculous amounts of water.

Oh, the picture of the girl who obviously isn’t me is my goal for the end of this school year. lol. I want muscles like that :)!

Goals for October:
  • Henna: check
  • Hit the gym at least 4 days a week
  • Moisture
  • Protective styles: check
  • Buy a scale – fitness center has one :).


Looking awesome Mershauna! Hair and body (dang, look at those abs!)! You’re going to have to give us a rundown on your straightening process and products! How ironic that your choreographer wanted your hair straight and that episode of Reed Between the Lines was about the daughter’s play director wanting her hair straight for the part. He gave her a wig though! She’s the one that opted for the flat-iron!

So the reason, or one of the reasons, for starting this blog was to track my progress on Shelli”s (www.hairscapades.com) Grow Out Challenge. Starting off kinda strong, but now I don’t even know what the hale I committed to. I need a refresher. lol.

No seriously, I have no clue what im supposed to be doing. So sad. I know. lol. Ummm, I did clip my ends before my road trip to Chicago (which will be covered in another post). That was the first time I’ve ever clipped my own ends. I don’t know if I cut enough off, but I was happy to see that after clipping them, my twists didn’t come out, which is what I was afraid of. In Chicago, I wore my twists just pin-curled and under a cap/headpiece most of the weekend. It was protected, but I didn’t moisturize it much as I didn’t want to stain my caps/headpieces.

After coming home, I did a wash and go the night before I left for Vegas, which was two days after removing my protective, pin-curled twists. Wore that WnG one day and then my sis gave me the most fantabulous mohawk a gurl could ever wish for (see pic). lol.

I was a little salty at the prep style, because I swore I looked like Felix the Cat. I’ll attach that pic as well.

ROFLMAO!!! I’m extra, I know. Anyway, of course a mohawk isn’t a protective style, well not fully because you have some of your hair out, but I turned it into one. I’m now rocking what Bubba terms my Ledisi. lol. I think I have a pic of this style as well (far above). I absolutely love these styles, but I’m over the braids and I’m ready for a nice, fab twist out or WnG. Probably by the weekend or early next week …who knows?

Exercise: What’s that??? Does walking the Vegas strip count??? Cause that’s about all I’ve done. And I’m sure no amount of walking can reverse the effect of all the eating I’ve done this past couple weeks … Lawd Have Mercy!!!! I’ve committed to starting Insanity Oct 1st or 2nd. I’ll post my new beginning weight at that time.  Baby Jesus be a kind scale … lol.

See, What Had Happened Was …


It’s Sunday night and I’m not feeling too hot as I sit and type this. Started getting a sore throat in the morning and now, have some congestion, achiness and chills on top of that. The whack thing is, it’s probably allergies. I’ve dosed up on some generic Sudafed now (the kind you have to sign for with your blood at the pharmacy) and will probably take some NyQuil capsules tonight, just for good measure. Also, just made a cup of chamomile tea that I’ll be sipping on shortly. Anywho, all that to say, I wasn’t sick last week, so it’s no excuse for not exercising the majority it. I messed up by not following my morning and evening time Rules (in bed by 11 pm and off the computer by 6:45 am). I was planning on doing hot yoga tonight, but knew it wasn’t happening when I started feeling so crappy. So, that’s the update on the fitness, or lack thereof, front for last week. Unlesss I’m completely incapacitated, there will be no excuse for this week.

In regard to hair, you already know. I was taking it easy until the Curly Nikki NYC Meet-Up, so I bunned the majority of the week. Well, I did have one day where I did a very simple banana clip updo. It’s nothing but a banana clip positioned vertically to form a ponytail and then I rolled the ends together, tucked, “poofed” it up and pinned with no more than 2 or 3 bobby pins).

On Saturday night, after wearing my hair in a TnC for three days, I decided I wanted to try to do the style pictured below. I’d seen it on someone’s PinInterest page (I found it because they had a picture of my pin-curled twists!).

It seemed simple enough and doable on hair stretched by a TnC (which, by the way, I was complimented on by a guy at the Sprint store … Oh yeah, I finally broke down and purchased an iPhone this weekend. If you remember, I was still rocking the Batphone ;).). I grabbed my camera to film it as I haven’t made a YouTube video in weeks! Well, the dang thing cut off at 13 seconds! It did that before and I thought it was because I had a lot of pictures on the camera. But this time, I only had 61!! So, I don’t know what the deal is. I’ll have to investigate as I really want to make some videos for you guys! Anywho, I tried to take a couple of pics of the style in progress, but didn’t do that great of a job. Also, once I looked at the inspiration picture again, I realized that I didn’t imitate the style very well. I placed my bun higher, made a real bun (with one Spin Pin) instead of a folded half bun, and placed the side rolls a lot higher. I also didn’t tuck my ends into the bun, but rather “scrunched” the curls and haphazardly pinned them. I liked it anyway (though I wish I started the side rolls closer to my face) and wore it like this on Sunday and plan on keeping it in for at least another day or two.

My next wash day will be Wednesday again as I have my company’s big Board of Directors dinner and meeting to attend on Thursday and Friday. I’ll probably do a TnC again to give the Gold N’ Hot another whirl. I’ll save the review on that for after my second set as I plan on trying the TnC on mostly dry hair rather than wet/damp. My review of the ApHogee 2 Minute Keratin Reconstructor will post this week though. Hmmmm, very interesting …


So, what are your hair and/or fitness plans for the week? Anyone starting to “Winterize” their routines? If so, what will you be doing differently?

I’m good on that front as my regimen and products work for any season. Oh, but I do plan on getting those twists soon as my hair arrived last week! Still need to find someone I trust to do it though!
