CurlyNikki NYC Meet-Up: I Was There!!

Standard

Could I look any more excited, but trying to be cool about it? LOL!

So, so, so much fun:)! I saw many familiar faces and lots and lots of new ones! Nik was just as GORGEOUS in person as she is online. I don’t think that she can take a bad pic either! But, I mean, look at her … how could she?? And, she let me hold Boog!!!! Boog came right to me!! I think she may have been confused by the hair and thought that I was Nik for a second (even Nik’s husband said that we looked alike from behind … WHAT a compliment!!). Boog went back pretty quickly to Nik, but she did let me get a kiss:)!!! She’s a little doll and I could have played with her the whole evening (maternal clock ticking much, right?)!! LOL!!

There were sooo many beautiful naturals out … I mean, talk about hair porn!! I just kept spinning around in circles trying to look at all the different styles and textures! OMGawh, natural hair is so the bomb!! I mean, in regard to variety, it just doesn’t get any better!!

Finally, THANK YOU to all the ladies who came up to me to let me know that you like the posts on CurlyNikki and/or enjoy Hairscapades. You made my evening sooooo memorable and really put me over the moon with happiness! You don’t know how much it means to me as it’s your support that makes this feel so worthwhile, like it’s helping someone (which is my intent) or at least entertaining 😉 … without all of you, I’d really just feel like a self-absorbed narcissist!! LOL!!  Okay, gotta get ready for work! But before I do, wanted to share pics with you guys! I’ll tell you more about the hair later!

  1. Tiffany, it would have been great to see you! I really do hope that you are able to make the next one! Hey, I think she IS doing one in Philly soon, isn’t she?!? If she does and it’s a weekday, I may just take off from work to head on out there and meet you:)!!

Marsha, at the event, I said to Rece, “Awwww, I wish Marsha was here!” Thanks:)!!

    • Me too. It was funny I was driving home yesterday saying to myself that the girls are prepping their hair and getting dressed now. Sad yes very sad face. Ok so what exactly happens at these meetup events? I want to feel as if I was there too. Lol.

      • It was mostly mingling Marsha. There were some Mizani gift bags that had two small sample size products, but I gave mine away because they told someone they were out (wait, Rece, was that Shanna? Now I can’t remember! LOL!!). But, they really weren’t:/. Nikki, one of the co-founders of NaturallyCurly.com and two of the founders/presidents or something of Mizani spoke briefly. They had some product demos set up around the club (I didn’t check out any of them though). And, that was it. It was just a lot of chatting, laughing, touching hair and having fun being in the presence of a room full of beautiful naturals!!

  2. Thanks for giving us the scoop on this event. Sounds like you all had fun. Everyone’s hair looks GREAT. I’m still transitioning (9 months so far), but these pics make anxious for my big chop day! Wish I was there!

    • No problem Nancy:)! I’m glad you all liked this quick post:)!! I definitely think being on all of these sites and seeing all of the gorg natural hair make long-term transitioning hard! Man, it’s like, “I want that!!!” But, you hang on in there, you’ll get there in your time:)! Oh, and transition story please:)!!

  3. You took a ton of pics. I only took about 7. I wrote my post already too but not going into detail about my hair. it’s obvious. It’s Flexi Rod set. That’s it. Nothing special. It’s going up today. I’m so tired and I’m late for work.

    • My “photographer,” aka Shana, took a lot of pics! LOL!! Although, I was the one saying, “Shana, take a pic!!” Your flexi set looked nice! Oh, you definitely need to do a post about your hair that day, given what you told us about what you were doing at work!! I won’t give away any spoilers!! LOL!!

  5. Shelli….What did you do to your hair and what did you use? I mean it looked soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo GOOD! OMG. I was looking at the pictures from when you first when natural and my hair looks just like that. But I love how it looks now. I’m wondering is it because of the length and henna. But about the meet-up! Dang, I wish I didn’t live so far away. I would have love to been there. “ALL” your pictures were fab!

    • Hahaha! You guys put such a smile on my face with all of the comments on this post today! Don’t worry Jas, I’m going to do a post with a blow by blow of my TnC. But, really, it’s the same TnC from my tutorial with only a couple very slight modifications. As to our hair, I think you curls are more juicy than mine naturally and your hair is thicker (meaning your strands). But, I definitely had far more curls.

  7. Shelli,

    The pictures look great!

I have to agree with all the others — your hair looked amazing! I would dare say it’s your best twist (braid) out ever! I did you achieve this look? Better question, why am I the only person on the Earth that can’t achieve a decent twist out? Truly sad!

Nonetheless, your hair is gorgeous and I found the content and level of detail on your site is truly informative and motivational…still, I need some offline assistance – lol. I am really in bad, bad, bad shape even though I thought I was doing everything right – right – right!

    • Awww, thanks Rhonda!! As I told Jasmine, I’ll be giving a blow by blow account soon! Maybe even tonight:)! But, it’s the same way I did it in my tutorial and I think it looks about the same … just my hair is longer, so it’s hanging a little longer, I think.

  11. OMG. yes i just shouted. i got so excited looking at the pics. everyone looked so gorgeeeeeeeous. i almost got a little teary eyed looking at the pics(ok i did get teary eyed). i wish i was there. i’m the newbie on the site. it feels like such challenge but seeing these pics make me definitely want to continue. i just told my mom that i’m definitely going natural, she thinks i should go for it. with all you guys with me i know i will be able to. thanks shelli for your help and all you gorgeous ladies who will be there along the way. i got up this morning and i didn’t even make a big fuss about the “kinks” in the front of my head that are truly unruly. instead i embraced them and smile, finger combed and a loose pony and didn’t look back. i was proud of myself. i keep looking at the pics in awe. do i sound corny? sorry.

    • LOL!! No, not corny at all, at all!! Love it!! Your comment brought a huge smile to my face!! You do the damn thing girl!! Seriously, I believe that a trash bag can look good if it’s worn with confidence. If you walk with pride, no one can tell you anything:)!! I’m soooo happy if we can help support you on your journey and you can find motivation and encouragement here! So, keep commenting, because we’ll be reading and replying:)!! And thank you!!

i have a question for you ultra fab experts, since i still have permed ends, can i apply henna or do i have to cut them off first(i’m not ready to do a drastic cut yet)?

    Like

      • Sophia, you can definitely use henna on relaxed or transitioning hair. But, I would definitely suggest that you see your doctor first to identify or eliminate any possible conditions and make certain any medical issues are addressed before experimenting. Also, what is your hair type (are your natural strands thick or thin and is your natural curl very tight, medium, loose)? The thing about henna is it can loosen the strands of fine and S-shaped curl hair. So, just wanted you to be aware of that if curl loosening might concern you.

        • Thanks again ladies. I should be seeing my doctor this friday. Hopefully he will refer me to a good dermo. As for my hair type i’m not sure, the front is very course but the back is soft and more straight. I’ve always had two different textures but since i started perming the front is extra course when it grows out. My hair is thin now sad to say. Before i messed up my hair with perming and coloring i had thick strands and a whole lot of hair. In junior high before i got my first perm the boys would blow spit balls in my fro lol. I long for those days minus the spit balls ofcourse.

    • You know, I wasn’t sure if it was just across the street or not! Was it packed? So glad that people who couldn’t get into the meet-up still had an opportunity to mix and mingle with Nikki and other naturals. It really was such a good time!

  14. Hey Shelli! It was great meeting you yesterday! Gosh, I hope you remember me! We chatted about protective styles and were in awe of the girl with the “cinnabon” hair. Anyways, thanks for being so open and warm. I’m naturally very shy, (bordering, socially awkward) when I first meet people, but you made it so easy. I hope to run into you again. Tell your sis I said hey and her dress, coupled with the wash n go ponytail puff was totally amazing. PS.. you rocked the twist n curl..

  15. Hey Shelli,

Nik just dropped a bomb that the secret to her super fly twist n curl lately has been her new secret ingredient — wait for it…..Dax Green (yup, Dax Green). I thought of you since back n the day you said you used TCB w/gel for both moisture and hold. You were so ahead of your time.

This revelation got me thinking…….maybe I should give the light grease+gel a whirl to see if could assist me with my pathetic twist n curl(less).

    Thoughts?

BTW – when are YOU doing a meet up in the Philly area?

    • Hey Rhonda C, I know this was for Shelli, but I have been noticing a rise in the use of the old school grease by a few YouTubers and their results have been simply amazing. Check out 101LadyT, her video is called “A blast from the past hair grease twist out” I absolutely love, love her hair.

    • Rhonda, I commented on that thread on CurlyNikki:) about the benefits of mineral oil. I know everyone hates on it, but it has it’s uses!! LOL! I’m hoping that the CurlyNikki Meet-Up in Philly is coming soon and I’ll make every attempt to attend that too!! As to your TnC, first, what is going wrong with them? Do you have pictures? Regardless, you gave me an idea for a post that I’ll do tonight for posting this week:)! So, stay tuned:)!!! And thanks for the idea! I think it’ll be a good one!

Called someone the wrong name at work on Tuesday! *blushing with embarrassment*!! So, tell me which beautiful young lady you are? I’ll even add your name to the captions and then I won’t forget when we meet again:)!! And thank you so much for the compliment!! How you found the step by step helpful!!
