Trena’s HairStory

Standard

How long have you been natural and why did you chose to go natural?
I guess I have been natural all my life…I would usually wear my hair straight all the time by using a hot comb. It wasn’t until November ’09 that I really started to embrace my curls and wear them every day!! Now I love them!

What is/was your biggest hair challenge/obstacle?
The biggest obstacle was finding the right product for my hair and realizing that this Hair had a mind of its own.

How did you overcome it or what are you doing now to try to address the problem?
Finally finding that prefect product and embracing my curls and being OK with them not looking prefect every day. Sometime I like a little frizz (who would have thought I would ever like that?).

What do you love most about your natural hair and/or about being natural?
It’s different, makes you stand out from the crowd and now I’m loving this big hair. It’s a feeling of freedom to play in the rain, dive in the pool and not be afraid to get your straight hair wet.

What is your current regimen? Has it changed in any major way since you first went natural?
I just Listen to my hair (as odd as that sounds). When it feels like a wash, I wash it … my curls hold up pretty well and I can usually get 3-4 day hair.

What are your Holy Grail and staple products?
Evo Styling Gel, Mixed Chicks or Mixed Elements, Pantene Natural Shampoo and Conditioner

What is your “go to” style? Do you wear protective and/or low manipulation styles? If so, how often and why?
Usually a Wash and Go … with those I can get 3-4 day hair. Out of those, I try to re-invent it every day by trying to pin some back or pin it up. I rarely will do a twist out … but I’m always looking for new styles to try.

How often do you cut/trim your hair? How do you cut it (salon, DIY, straight, curly, in twists)?
I usually try to clip whenever I decide to wear a blow out, which is maybe once of twice a year.

Has going natural impacted other areas of your life (i.e. health & fitness, style, environmental consciousness, etc.)? If so, how and in what ways has it affected your lifestyle?
It has helped me embrace myself and do things I’ve always wanted to do. By embracing me, it has helped me embrace my artistic side. I started painting, selling my art work and I’m now working on my artistic career!!! Check out the blog http://artisticallyurban.blogspot.com to learn more about that side of me!!!

Do you have a “hair crush?” If so, who?
You, love your style … along with countless ladies on the web and YouTube. Wayyyy to many to name! I will have to say that Taren916 on YouTube was the lady that introduced me to BIG HAIR!!!

Where can we find you online?
Artistically Urban

What advice would you give someone who is contemplating going natural and/or becoming discouraged with their natural journey?
Embrace you curls. Even with straight hair, there was always a bad hair day every now and then. Try a new technique or a new product if you can’t get the look you’re looking for. And search the web for blog like these that will give you tips and encouragement from other naturals!!!

  1. First let me say you are so beautiful. Your skin. Your hair. i say that in a strictly “straight” sort of way LOL. I’m sure you get it all the time. I love your hair’s definition and am so jealous you can wear a wash and go! My hair would be a balled up mess!

  2. I was gonna say the same. You’re beautiful! (no homo). Lol

Love your hair. I think the color adds a lot of flair too. What products do you use? What do you find works the best to hold your curls and eliminate frizz when you do your wash and go?

Now let me check out your artwork! =)

      • Rece, I’ve used the gel because I used to get the Ouidad cuts. It IS really good … but, it was just too much for my blood. Gave really nice definition and curls and blocked humidity. But, they used this other “pomade,” for lack of a better word, to break up and soften the curls (you know, scrunch the crunch). You only need a pea size drop, so it lasted a long time. But, it was pretty expensive too. So, though I really liked those two things, I just couldn’t stomach ordering them online and adding shipping to the expense or trekking to a salon 30 minutes away from home to get them.
