Natural Hair/GOC Meet-Up in DC (August 2011)!!!

Standard

As some of you may know, Hairscapades was born out of my participation in the NaturallyCurly.com sponsored Curly Nikki Presents Kim Coles’ Grow Out Challenge.  The challenge is over at the end of July and a few of us who interact quite often through our GOC blogs would like to put together a Meet Up!

That being said, we would like to get an idea of how many people might be interested in attending and determine a time and location so that we can start planning it.  You don’t have to be part of the challenge to participate.  This event is for all kinky, coily, curly, transitioning, contemplating transitioning, big chopping and/or natural hair lovers are welcome!!  As we are all over the place, but those of us who interact the most often seem to be located on the East Coast, we were thinking of DC as the possible locale. Given that it is very hard to follow and locate comments on the GOC blogs, I am creating the information gathering forum here (for now;0).

If interested in attending, please answer the following questions in the comments section of this post:

  1. Can you/would you be willing to travel to Washington DC for a Meet Up? UPDATE: Looks like we will be meeting in DC.
  2. Which month would you prefer, August or September? Other? Please specify. UPDATE: Looks like we may be going with 8/27. Would that work for you?
  3. Would you be interested in participating in a Product Swap Meet at the Meet Up?
  4. Can/Would you like to assist in the planning and organization of the GOC Meet Up? (If so, please message me your contact information via the e-mail button below.)

(Note: My SO lived in DC for many years. So, if it looks like it’s a go, I’ll solicit him for locale suggestions depending on how many will attend.  He’s a little connected in DC, so think he’d be able to help us secure a nice, trendy location if this thing doesn’t get too big.)

Happy Growing Ladies!!

8/10/11 UPDATE:  A location and time have now been secured!!  Our event will be at the world famous Bohemian Caverns in the historic U Street Black Arts district from 2-5 pm on Saturday, August 27th!! More details to follow shortly!

Hair Crush: Jasmine’s HairStory

Standard

Describe yourself in 20 words or less (she cheated, but I’ll allow;-).
My name is Jasmine AKA CurlsDivine and I would say I am a fun, adventurous person who absolutely adores the Lord. I take risks and I’m always challenging myself for the next goal in life. I looked at this natural hair thing as a goal to gain MBL ( mid-back length) hair. So, it has just turned into a new fun community where I have enabled myself to meet and establish new relationship with so many new people (Shelli).

How long have you been natural and why did you chose to go natural?
I was officially natural on January 16, 2011 at 12am. I transitioned first for 10 months. My goal was 18 months of transition because of a length issue. But, after I took out my Senegalese twists … it was matt city and that was all she wrote. So, I had to BC. I only chose to go natural because I wanted to grow my hair to mid-back length (MBL). I added tracks with my own permed APL hair to make it longer and my hair stylist just made a comment that my own hair would grow that long. I began researching how I could do it and ran across a Youtuber whose hair was super long in my book (WL) and her secret was “No Perm.” I had an epiphany. From there it was my goal, and still is, to grow my hair to MBL.

APL - Transitioning (Dec 2010)

Did you transition or big chop?
I transitioned from March 5, 2010 (10 months) then big chopped on January 16, 2011.

Day after BC (Jan. 16, 2010)

What is/was your biggest hair challenge/obstacle?  How did you overcome it or what are you doing now to try to address the problem?
The biggest challenge so far was the short hair. I had no clue how to style it. So, the only thing I could do is embrace and allow time to pass to see results, including finding the perfect products that work for my own texture.

What do you love most about your natural hair and/or about being natural?
The curls. As a child/teenager/grown-up, I’ve always wanted hair like those bi-racial kid. But, once I began to see my own head of hair, I was mad I didn’t do this years ago. I also like that I can wet my hair anytime and go. It is so freeing!

What is your current regimen?  Has it changed in any major way since you first went natural?
Well, it has changed some but not much. Really, I try my best to keep it simple enough to memorize. So let’s see:

  • Wash/Condition once a week: Trader Joes Tea Tree
  • Deep Condition once a week: Aubrey’s Organics
  • Maybe co-wash once a week: Trader Joes Tea Tree Conditioner
  • Leave-In Conditioner: Leave in from wash Trader Joes & Kinky Curly
  • Henna once a month: Mendi From the Indian Store
  • Style with my favorites in order: ( Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding & Infinite Organics Oil)

What are your Holy Grail and staple products?
OH MY GOSH! So many people downed Miss Jessie’s products, but they have worked miracles for my hair. I love Curly Pudding; Aubrey’s Organics Conditioners (GPB [Glycogen Protein Balancing] & Honeysuckle Rose, I mix them!); Henna; Kinky Curly Leave-In; Infinite Organics Oils; and Trader Joes Tea Tree Shampoo & Conditioner.

What is your “go to” style (share a picture of it, if you have one!)? Do you wear protective and/or low manipulation styles? If so, how often and why?
For now it’s the Flat Twist Outs; If it’s a protective style just twist. My low manipulation style is the “Puff”.

How often do you cut/trim your hair? How do you cut it (salon, DIY, straight, curly, in twists)?
I think I will only trim once a year. I just recently got my hair trimmed from my long time and only stylist. She is the only person I trust and allow to cut my hair (She is not a natural hair stylist). When I BC’d, I just chopped it off myself. Surprisingly, I cut it pretty evenly.

Has going natural impacted other areas of your life (i.e. health & fitness, style, environmental consciousness, etc.?) If so, how and in what ways has it affected your lifestyle?
Yes, somewhat. I have started taking vitamins daily and I’m encouraging myself to join somebody’s gym.

Do you have a “hair crush?” If so, who?
WOW! I have many, but the one person I love to pieces is ivycharlaine. I totally wish my hair was just like hers. Another would be LeobodyC5; she is the very reason I went natural. There are so many, but those two really affected me in my natural journey.

Who do you follow online (i.e. blog/website, Youtube, Fotki, etc.)?
Blogs: CurlyNikki; ManeandChic; hairscapades
YouTube: ivycharlaine; TraNaturally; Allthatsgold
Fotki: Zhara; Nik Star; HairCrush; ForeverCurlyCatrina

These are just a few, but really I stalk everybody…LOL!

Where can we find you online?
Fotki as CurlsDivine.

What advice would you give someone who is contemplating going natural and/or becoming discouraged with their natural journey?
Do it! Just step out on faith and get to know yourself in a different light.

Anything else that you’d like to add?
Thank you Shelli, you are a superstar beaming a wonderful light!
