Grow Out Challenge … to be continued?

Standard

Length Check 2/19/11

As many of you know, the Curly Nikki presents Kim Coles’ Grow Out Challenge on NaturallyCurly.com officially ends on July 31st. When I began the challenge in February, I set a goal of waist length (WL) hair by the end of 2011 and a weight goal to lose 25 pounds and regain my ideal weight of 120 pounds. I achieved my weight goal this month (+ or – a pound or two depending on the day of the week;-), but still have a few inches to go to achieve my hair goal. However, I also still have a few more months to get there as my personal “deadline” was beyond the end of the CN/KC GOC. That being said, I’d like to continue a Grow Out Challenge here on Hairsacapades. The idea is to continue (or begin, if you aren’t already participating) working towards our goals for a period of 6 months, until the end of January 2012. Michelle of Radiant Skin suggested/requested that I post hair tips for 30 days and I’ve started a “Tips & Tricks” category to accommodate that request. I can’t guarantee that I’ll have 30 concurrent days of tips & tricks, but I think I’ll be able to produce 30 over the course of a couple of months.

If you’re interested in participating, please tell us where you are now and what goals you’d like to work towards achieving by the end of January 2012. Finally, please let me know what things you’d like to see on Hairscapades over the course of the challenge.

Thanks and,

H A P P Y Ā  Ā G R O W I N G ! ! !

Length Check: 4/24/11

(I’ll post a pic of my length check at the end of July for the conclusion of the CN/KC GOC and the beginning of the Hairscapades GOC.)

    • Andrea, try starting with just a little something (20-30 minutes, 3 days a week) and try to build from there. Trying to go all in doesn’t work for everyone. I know your skin and scalp also get irritated by the sweat, so try more moderate exercise and try to gradually progress. And I agree. Met so many kind, supportive and encouraging woman through this challenge. Glad we are going to keep the support going=).

  3. I would love to participate. I am around APL right now and would LOVE to reach BSL by January 2012. More than anything, I would like to focus more on the health of my hair and incorporate more protective styles. I don’t experiment much and get bored with the same old buns so I end up wearing down which works against me because my hair is SUPER fine! (that’s why I love hairscapades….protective styles galore!). I think I’ll take more pics too in an order to make myself accountable. I have weight loss goals as well but I don’t even know where to begin with that!

    • In regard to the weight loss goals, begin with day one;-). How is your diet? The first thing I suggest to people is to eliminate sodas and juice if they drink those things. You can wean off full sugar sodas with diets, but artificial sweetners aren’t the best either and you should eventually try to wean yourself off of them. Then, I suggest switching out refined carbs (white sugar, white bread, white rice, pasta, etc.) for whole grain, complex carbs (wheat bread, potatoes [sweet, red, white], brown rice, oatmeal). Those two things will reduce calories and increase fiber, which helps eliminate fats. Then, just start with walking 30 minutes 3 days a week. Those few things can jump start you. However, I say all of this not having much of an idea about what your diet and exercise regimen are like now.

      • I wasn’t raised as a healthy eater but in the last few years, I got super healthy. Didn’t drink any soda or even juice, no meat at all, no refined carbs. Really only veggies, fruit, beans and lentils, occasional fish, nothing fried, no junk food or snacks. I worked out HARD 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day. And then the baby came. lol I fell WAY off and have just been struggling to get it back together. But I can do it. I have no choice. My little man has started RUNNING and I have to be able to keep up with him. lol He is a monster. Like you said, I need to just start with day one. 30 minutes at least 3 days a week. **sigh** No reason I can’t start tomorrow.

  4. šŸ™‚ You’re the bestest. You can count me in of course
Goal: Bust length by end of 2012. I’m almost there in the bottom. Now, I’m battling my crown and sides.

Question: Do you ever come your hair dry? I did so yesterday and it seems I heard a few crackles. Henna-ing this weekend.

    Like

    • Only pseudo finger comb dry … NEVER with a comb, not even wide tooth. Snap, crackle, pop!! Yeah girl, I wouldn’t go there if I was you unless you were already finger detangled and did it very slowly, from the ends gradually moving up the length to your roots. But, personally, I wouldn’t do it at all. I wince whenever I hear anything that sounds like a crackle or pop!

  5. Most definitely! I’m going to chronicle it on my blog as well, so I will track back to you! I think you should have a Q&A portion through the challenge, like a “Got Skills?” segment! If you like the idea, answer my question first, what can I do to prevent my new growth from matting when I can only put my hair in a bun?? LOL

    Like

    • Ha! Got Skills? Love it!! LOL!! Now, the thing is, there’s a good chance I won’t be able to answer most questions! LOL!! Also, I’d need more details. Is it matting when you’ve been wearing a bun for several days? I think I might have a suggestion that could help;-). I won’t answer your question here, as I’ll save it for the first one. But, I’ll shoot you a suggestion on FB;-).

      • That’s the thing, I don’t leave my hair in a bun because since I exercise everyday and I’m in the desert, I have to moisturize every night! So when I’m doing that, I discover a big matted up clump of hair that formed throughout the day. At first it was just on one side but last night it was on both. šŸ˜¦ I used my leave in to detangle but I always end up losing some hair because it’s just at the line of demarcation so the relaxed ends can’t stand the manipulation. I’ll get a pic of it next time it happens. It’s definitely my new growth which scares me because even though I love the thickness…I can’t even keep my hair from wanting to “dread” up during one day!

        Like

        • That’s how I lost a lot of strands in the beginning. The thing that has been most beneficial for me is to detangle in the shower with conditioner under running water and a wide tooth comb. I read about everyone else doing it, but didn’t pay it any mind. When I actually tried it, I was shocked by how easy it was to comb through. I was mad at myself for not doing it sooner. My relaxed ends are atrocious now, due to all of the breakage. I wonder if it’s inevitable though.

          Like

          • Rece I do that when I cowash and shampoo…the issue is that I go to bed tangle free, fix my bun then at the end of the day it’s matted in the middle!! My hair has a mind of it’s on, lol.

  6. How about adding a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly check in. Almost like Curly Nikki’s Fierce Fridays but just so that everybody can show off any progress that they want to share on a regular basis.

    Like

    • Valencia, you are reading my mind. Since this won’t be set-up like the GOC, I was totally thinking of doing a few things so we were all sharing our progress. I was saving my “proposals” for after I gauged interest. So, glad to know that something I was thinking of suggesting is something that you would like. You know, I’ll go ahead and say it here and I’ll post some of my ideas in about a week. So, I was thinking we do starting pics like you suggested, with goals and starting regimen. Then, do a Bi-weekly or monthly update post on a certain day with a little about what is going on with each person (to be sent to me via e-mail for posting in a “feature.”). Then, for those who are maintaining their own blogs, do a weekly feature of different people’s more expansive updates with a link back to their blog. I also have a DIY project in mind for those with length goals and an idea for those with thickness goals=). Whaddaya think?!?

      • When I typed my reply at work, it pre-populated with my other email addresses! That’s probably why. All the Michelles are me lol

Thanks for the tip on the combing. Yeah it was snap crackle but I felt weird pulling my hair up with it not being completely smooth. Once I noticed that it was popping I sprayed some water on it and then added some leace in and JBCO. I think that helped but honestly I’m not going to do it at all now though. I don’t want anything stunting my hair growth šŸ™‚

Oh so how about this…I put my hair in 2 cornrolls last night thinking I’d use it as a protective style. Problem is they were mad fuzzy even with wearing a stocking cap and a silk scarf. I woke up and was like oh hillllllz no LOL. I took them out and threw my hair up in a banana clip for a textured side ponytail. I put it on my new fotki along with other pics. Have ou seen the fotki? I’m going to document my hair growth challenge stuff there in the journal and by uploading the pics.

    • If you’re shoulder length, seems you’re doing well already! There are sooo many tips, so that’s what I’ll be trying to post over the next couple of months. Also, I don’t know what you are doing now and if it’s working for you. So, I might just end up telling you things you already know. It sounds like you successfully transitioned, so you must be doing something right=)!! The two words of advice that I can definitely give though are to have patience if you start to get frustrated and to listen to your hair/scalp. If they are telling you they don’t like something, despite how everyone else is raving about it, listed to your hair/scalp, not everyone else. Doing otherwise will often result in setbacks and misery. And thanks for visiting and commenting. So excited that I’m seeing some new names in the comments and that it looks like we can at least have a little GOC group here on hairscapades=)!!

I hope you don’t mind if I stay in contact with you regarding my experience in addition to all the questions I’ll probably have.

I’m going to be posting a “roadmap” of sorts for the Hairscapades GOC and bi-weekly or monthly check-ins with photos are beyond welcome!! I’m going to be begging for them=)!! Did you see LaShonda’s Henna and Me HairStory? You can see the difference 3/4 treatments made on her frizz too! I wish you all the luck in the world and hope it works for you! Just make sure you have a good understanding of the process before you start and cover your bathroom in newspaper or old towels/cloths! The first couple of times can be messy! LOL! But, after a few rounds, you’ll be an expert. Thank you so much for visiting and I’m so happy you enjoy my blog=)! Tell a friend!! LOL!

    • Jen, great minds think alike!! *lol* I started drafting the “roadmap” for the GOC and one is a weekly exercise/diet tip/post. OMG … it would be AWESOME if you could contribute and write posts for that!!! It would one, bring a different perspective (and from a frickin’ marine LOL!!!;) and two, take some of the pressure off of me to come up with a post every week. I was so psyched when I read your comment and offer on my cell!!!! Couldn’t wait to get to my phone to respond!!! So, if you want to start writing some now, please do so. I can create posts and schedule them for future dates. So, if I can start prepping some of the posts now, that would be sooo helpful!! 7/20/11 UPDATE: My email is now HAIRSCAPADES (at) gmail (dot) com. Thank you!!

My hair….hmmmm. There was a post recently on CurlyNikki, I think, about fine hair that has a hard time retaining length. That is my hair exactly! It breaks if you look at it the wrong way (I swear). Add to that is the fact I don’t have a solid regimen down and I think I might be too rough when handling it. I’m currently at collar bone length (after 2.5yrs arghh) and I will just like to retain at least .5″ a month.

  17. Perfect! Considering I wanted to do the GOC but found out about in June!! I’m only just starting my transition to natural hair. My last relaxer was at the end of March this year. I just trimmed my ends and am ready to work on retaining length and growing healthy, natural hair! By the end of the challenge I want to have retained my 1/2″ of new growth per month. As far as fitness, I’m trying to exercise 4-5 days a week so that by the end of the challenge I weigh in at 125-130lbs (which means I have about 20-15lbs to lose). Drink 64 oz of water daily and just work toward being a more perfect me!

    Viva la vida!

I’m new to wearing my hair curly. Haven’t had a relaxer in about a year (not sure if the last one I put in really took anyway). I’m working on losing a bit of weight too so this the perfect challenge for me. I’m looking for my first curly hair stylist so that I can get my hair trimmed while it’s in its curly state. I’m very excited. If anyone lives in the Oakland, CA area and knows of a stylist who can trim curly hair, please let me know. Grow baby grow šŸ™‚

  22. Count me in as well!! I’m currently a little past BSL and my goal for Jan 2012 is to have thicker hair. I’m not really all about chasing length because I’ve had long hair in the past, but I want thickness. Also, I’m trying to get my body toned by the end of August or at least September. I’m 5’2″ and 122 lbs. so I’m pretty comfortable weight wise, I just want to be more toned.

I BC’d on 4/2/11. I’m looking to achieve at least shoulder length thicker hair by the end of 2011. I currently have my hair in braids and will be taking them out this weekend. I’ll do a length check at that time because I’m really not sure how long my hair is. I don’t think I’m a TWA anymore though. I recently started working out again (more regularly). I want to be toned, slimmer, and back in my size 7 Express jeans (LOL).

Soooo not a solo kinda girl… Self discipline.. blah blah blah… I’m ready to: grow my hair to BSL and stop breakage; finally trim off what’s left of the heat damage; get my over 30 body back in shape; and get (back) on the Dean’s List this semester, all while working full time. Let’s go!

  25. Count me in! I’ve been lurking for a month now, and was so inspired by your regimen post I went out and bought kettlebells and the Brooks DVD last week. I’m also training with a c210k app to lose the 40 pounds gained after I stopped running last year. I have the Disney Wine and Dine to do in October so I’m hoping I’ll be fit to run it by then. I started this week and have 2 kettlebell workouts and 2 runs under my belt. Guess what? I feel great! (I was hurtin’ for a couple of days though from the kettlebells. That stuff is no joke.)

As for my hair- I’m 10 months post BC, have about 5/6 inches. Since my hair is still short, I don’t have a specific length goal right at the moment, but am more concerned with retaining, avoiding breakage, and repairing the bushy ends I have now. (No splits, just some ssks) Eventually, I would like to get to BSL. (I know that’s not going to happen during this challenge, lol!)

Thank you so much for doing this. You really are an inspiration.

My goals are; healthy, beautiful hair that retains length, learning better hair care routines than I have practised in the past, taking better care of my skin and finally loosing about ten pounds for 2012. I’m hoping to get to SL hair by spring 2012. I had mucho breakage from a texturizer that I didn’t keep up so I cut about four years of growth and I’m still missing that length šŸ˜¦
