Get Thee Behind Me, PJ!!!

So, yesterday, I was at Target for Sudafed (my allergies raised their ugly heads and I had to get my drugs. Had to settle for generic pseudoephedrine as Sudafed was recalled. Why didn’t anyone tell me?!?!). So, as I’m walking towards the register, what is staring me right in the face?!?! Frickin’ Shea Moisture and Curls products!!! Sitting there taunting me on the aisle display shelf! Soooo unfair!! And they had the SM Yucca Baobab Volumizing line that I’ve been wanting to try!!! I had the conditioner in my hand ya’ll, was walking to the register to pay for it, stopped in my tracks, looked at it, remembered my PJ Stash posts … 70+ products in my house and said “I don’t need this. Nooooooo!!!!” *pushing hand holding product away from self* “Get thee behind me!!”

Okay, but why was I, only 2 hours earlier, in the only beauty supply store (BSS – *note to self* add to lexicon) in NJ that sells Qhemet products trying to get my PJ fix on because CurlyNikki has been singing the praises of the Cocoa Ghee? See this post and this post and this post and then this post!!! C’mon, seriously, what’s a PJ to do?!?! Look at her hair, read how she hasn’t washed it in a month, see her keep extolling a product over and over and over again and tell me how could I resist my primal PJ instincts?!?!!

They were SOLD OUT!! D@#$!!!  A new shipment comes in today!! D@#$!!!!  I was in the area because I was meeting a friend who lives about a mile away from the store, but the spot is a good 30-40 minutes from my house/job!!!  He giveth and then he taketh away!!!  Grrrrrr Aaaaaarghhh!

(hmmmm … wonder if I can get my girlfriend to go pick some up for me after work?!)

Okay, has anyone tried either of these ? Reviews?  Good, bad or ugly?  Help a PJ out!!

  1. OMG you had to share this with the rest of us PJs???????????? Now you know where I’m ready to go right? LOL

Sorry to hear about the allergies but don’t claim them. They don’t belong to you!

  2. lol..I am glad I have a strong sense of self of not buying product I don’t need. I can relate to the allergies from product (Sorry about what happened to you). One of the reasons that stop me on the PJism track. I’m curious, How come natural blogs never talk about “PJism and Allergy don’t mix”? I had to check the ingredients first before I buy. I had to avoid anything with chemical, fragrance, shea butter, or flowery. Tough for me.

      • Oh no, it wasn’t the products that made my allergies act up, it’s allergy season and NJ is madly pollenated! And, I refuse to keep my windows closed. I love the warm weather too much. The only hair product that I’ve had an issue with is amla. But that is a pretty funny title=).

  3. Man you sound like me! LOL I have a serious PJ problem. I’ve been dying to try the Shea Moisture Yucca line, but I haven’t got around to it yet. On Tuesday I ordered some Qhemet products, I keep hearing nothing but good things about their line. I ordered the Amla & Olive Heavy Cream and the Burdock Root Cream, I was sooooo tempted to buy the Cocoa Ghee (because of Curly Nikki) but at the last minute I decided against it. Now I think I made a mistake in not going ahead and trying it. I cannot wait for my order to get here!!! Aaaaaaah, so excited. I’ve been itching to order from them for a few weeks, but they were sold out of everything. I’ve come to terms with it. “My name is Naj, and I’m a PJ, and I’m ok with it” hahahahah 😛

  4. I actually am a huge fan of the Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab line. I have fine hair and ever since I started using it about 5-6 months ago I have noticed a huge difference. I also use the shampoo and hair mist. The conditioner does not have the best slip-its moisturizing but not anything amazing. I add olive oil for extra moisture.

  5. I’ve used the Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab shampoo for almost a year now. Can’t guarantee that the shampoo is actually the cause of my hair thickening. Could just be the fact that it has been a year; however, since I’ve noticed this change in my hair, I see no reason for me to veer away from it just in case it is the reason. :o) I can only use the conditioner as a leave-in since it has absolutely no slip. I then follow-up with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie before twisting. I am a true fan.

    • LB, do you use the shampoo full strength? I just tried the Moisture Retention shampoo and it made my hair tangle badly. I only use it at my scalp/roots and then rinse it the length of my hair. But, I had such a hard time detangling. I’ve tried other shampoos and keep returning to Deva No Poo because it’s the only one that doesn’t give me this problem, but the SM Moisture Retention shampoo was the worst. I was debating diluting it and trying it on a very small section to see if I had the same problem. Do you think using the conditioner as a leave-in helps with thickness? Is there anything else in the line that you use?

  6. Yes, I do. But first, I detangle with diluted conditioner (right now, Suave Professionals Almond and Shea Butter). I twist as I go and then wash my hair in twists. That helps a great deal, b/c before (when I washed my hair with it loose) I was in for some frustration. Using the conditioner as a leave in may help to thicken, but over the course of the year, I haven’t always used it. I used to use Yes to Tomatoes (b/c it promised voluminous hair), but since the formula changed, I figured that I might as well try the SM thickening conditioner. I’ve used the thickening mist but I think the science behind that (if you can refer to it as such) is that it causes my roots to swell. May even be the equivalent of spritzing water on a twist set. I’ve tried the curl and style milk and the thickening milk. I can’t seem to use either successfully on dry hair. So right now, I love the Curl Enhancing smoothie, the deep treatment masque and the anti-breakage maque.

    • I diluted the SM Shampoo my last wash day and it went sooooo much better. And thanks for the reply!! I’ll probably pick up something in the Yucca and Baobab line. I just can’t resist;-).

  7. Hi Shelli,

Rhonda C again….I am preparing to place an order on Qhmets. I am going to try the Morniga and Castor Oil that Nik has been raving about. I need a “cream” as well. I have the AOHC but it is wayyy too heavy for my fine strands. I am not partial to cocoa butter smells so the Coco Detangling Ghee is a no go for me. I am told that the Burdock Root Butter Cream is a better choice. Have you given it a try? Thumbs up or down?

    ~Rhonda C

    • Hey Rhonda,

No, I haven’t tried the Burdock Root Butter Cream. The Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee is the only one I’ve tried and it’s just okay to me. Maybe I’m not using it right as I do tend to use one thing on wash day and then add other stuff when I need to re-moisturize. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. I have a friend who wrote this about the two, but she hasn’t tried the Burdock Root yet:

The Amla & Olive is a “heavy” cream, but it’s more liquidy than the Burdock Root Butter Cream… which is supposed to be lighter than the heavy cream. Like, if I turn the A&O jar upside down, the cream will spill out. But the Burdock Root says in the jar because it’s thicker.
      I’m confused.
I would have expected the exact opposite based on the description. But let me be clear, this is NOT a complaint. 🙂

Anyways, as I was saying before the tangent, the A&O is treating my ends well. I haven’t used the Burdock Root yet.
