Curly Nikki and Dark & Lovely Curl Power Event Recap

Standard

curlpowerpic

I know, I know! This is overdue! LOL!! But, it’s been a work in progress over the last several days. The work wasn’t writing it … it was getting all the pics onto my computer (camera … which died at the event and cell phone), then re-sizing them and deciding which ones to include! As you see … I didn’t make much of a decision! I’m sharing almost all of them!! LOL!!

On to the night!! CurlyNikki sent me an early invite for VIP access to the media event prior to the meet-up. So, my sister Shana, Wei and I got there at 5 to find a swanky space, hors d’oeuvres, drinks, music, natural models, Dark & Lovely stylist booths, a green screen photo area, media and lots of lovely naturals. But, because it was early, we were able to easily move around, get seats, get pics with fellow bloggers and see Marsha Ambrosius’s arrival!! I even got to ask Marsha a couple of questions and record her!!! But, I need a space upgrade to load it here … so, you’ll just have to read my recap of it ;) !! LOL!! So, her hair was so fly, big, lush, wavy … I had to ask how it was styled. She said it was sectioned into about 8 and set into Bantu knots with a small amount of the Dark and Lovely Au Naturale pomade gel product!! I also had to say how much I loved her accent and she said that American accents are loved in England! Who knew?!?! LOL!!

Anywho, the event overall was so awesome!! Definitely the best CurlyNikki NYC event that I’ve attended!! The music, the food, the open bar (neither of which I partook in … I don’t drink and y’all know I’m working on this weight thing ;) ), the whole thing was just so much fun!!

And with that … check out the view!!

Yes!! We had another haircut party with Tameeka McNeil-Johnson aka Jaded Tresses. This time, it was at the house of Tiffany’s twin sister, Trina (not pictured). So, I’m a little delayed with this post because the pics I took with my iPhone were pretty crappy and I needed Tiffany to hook me up with quality pics from her good camera!! (No more being lazy and not taking out the real camera for me ;) ).

Anywho, there was a gaggle of ladies, some there for services, others just to partake in the festivities, observe and learn.

Check out the view!

And, on a side note, I brought the Cream and Coco Curls for Days Hair Pudding and the Mizani True Textures Leave-in and Jelly for styling. I wanted to see how they worked on a WnG. Tameeka played around with both products and got better definition and less frizz on the side done with … surprise, surprise … the lightweight and creamy C&C Hair Pudding!

But, get this, with everyone else, she used her own concoction of Eco Styler Crystal gel mixed with lots of water, coconut oil and a few drops of lavender essential oil!! And look at those results!! I’m definitely going to have to try that combo the next time I do a WnG … or maybe even a twist or braid out!!

Oh, and for those of you interested in my lovely baby doll tee as seen here:

Curlisious_shirt-pink

It was gifted to me by Connie at Curlisious.com this past summer and I am long overdue sharing it!! It comes in three colors (white, pink, and yellow) at $25 a pop!! Pretty HAWT, right?!?

Bunning Challenge Week 5: Still Straight

Standard

straighthair121512_3

A little late, but here is the recap for last week ;) . My hair was still straight and I essentially wore it in a twisted ponytail or bun every day except Saturday. I continued to use Sofn’Free Nothing But Mold & Hold Wax and Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter to keep my edges smooth and Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Reconstructive Elixir for softness and shine.

On Wednesday, during a late evening at work, I created this bun by wrapping a twisted ponytail around the hair elastic, tucking and pinning the ends, then spreading the twist a little to cover the elastic in the middle and securing the hair with another hair pin.

bunnedtwist121312_1bunnedtwist121312_2bunnedtwist121312_3

I was so pleased because it looked so intricate from behind, but was so simple and easy to do!!

On Friday evening, I arrived home to a LOVERLY surprise!!

Threadmillgift

My wonderful Dottie of Threadmill made me earrings and a beautiful hat and infinity scarf set for Christmas!!! You see, her shop and satin-lined hats (which was a suggestion I gave her last year to appeal to her natural-haired clientele), were featured in Essence online’s article, The Ultimate Natural Hair Bloggers’ Gift Guide.

ThreadmillessencefeatureThere are some great gift ideas in this gallery, including Dottie’s hats, of course!!

Okay, back to hair. On Friday evening, after wearing my hair in another twisted ponytail during the day, I it into a chignon.

chignon121412_5

I slept in the bun and on Saturday in the early afternoon, I released it with plans to put my hair back into a high ponytail for an event … only to discover the prettiest waves I’d gotten from an overnight bun yet!!

straighthair121512_2

They were so deep, full and shiny … I was very pleased … except, I still had to get in the shower!! Ughh!!! But, I just clipped up my hair, threw on a satin-scarf and my terry-lined shower cap and got it done. The waves did fall a little from the confinement, but it held up pretty decently for the next part of the recap!!

A Family Holiday Dinner: “Operation Get Right” Got Stalled

Ughhhh. Yea. I didn’t work out at all last week :( . It was a rough week at work and I was at the office as late as 8:30 pm one night and didn’t get home until 7:30 pm most nights last week. And, although I didn’t eat horribly during the week, can’t say the same for the weekend. You see, we had a family holiday dinner on Saturday and the spread was RIDIC!!

photo 3

Gallery pics jacked from courtesy of my sister, Shana ;) .

So yeah, completely fell off the wagon and need to get back on it *sigh*.

Oh … yeah … and you might want to know, a few other ladies and I got Jaded this past weekend!!

But, I’ll have to tell you more about that tomorrow ;) !

Back to School: De-Summerize Your Child’s Hair

Standard

by Tameeka aka Jaded Tresses

After such a hot and humid season, it’s a good idea to “de-summerize” your child’s hair in preparation for the fall and upcoming school year. The sun, although fun for our little ones, can wreak havoc on their tresses. It’s important that we nurture them in preparation for the drier weather approaching. As adults, we may have catered to our own tresses a little more than we have done to our future manes, which may have been in and out of water/chlorine and salt/sun continuously  without care ;).

So now moms and pops, it’s a must for us to “de-summerize” their treasured locks. What that means is Clarify, Recondition and Re-hydrate  their precious tresses. Because a child’s hair is virgin, vellus and naturally porous, it can sustain the most damage during the hot summer months, leaving the hair parched and dehydrated craving moisture.

Here are few things that I suggest that you do in preparation that  can help aid you through the rough cold weather we are about to embark on during the school year.

Tools and Products

  • Hard hat or bonnet dryer: Great for deep treatments, as well as drying tresses once styled.
  • Plastic cap
  • Duck bill or butterfly clips to help section off tresses
  • A wide-tooth comb, double wide-tooth comb or Denman brush to help with detangling
  • Shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner

I will list a few shampoos, conditioners and deep conditioners that may be of some use:

  • Non-sulfate: The Organix line has various shampoos, conditioners and masks (find in local beauty supply stores and Target).
  • Curlisto Natural Coils line has a cleanser, conditioner, leave-in and mask (find online at Curlisto.com and at the Fifth Ave salon).
  • Shea Moisture (Target)
  • Carol’s Daughter Monoi line (find at Carol’s Daughter locations and online).
  • Ouidad Curl Quencher shampoo, conditioner, moisture lock leave-in and signature deep treatment (find at Sephora, the flagship salon on 57th st or online at Ouidad.com).
  • Clarifying: Pantene Nature Fusion has a great shampoo and conditioner (find in local beauty supply stores and Target)
  • Deep conditioner: KeraCare Intensive Restorative Masque is a great deep conditioner (find in local beauty supply stores).

Step 1: Clarifying Shampoo
Clarifying shampoos help to  remove product build-up, salt, chlorine and mineral build up from the hair. So, if you have been consistently using a non-sulfate shampoo and/or conditioner on your child’s hair, as well as applying oils because they have been swimming and had a generous amount of sun exposure, then this is definitely your first step.

Directions:

  1. Wet the child’s hair thoroughly, rinsing out all of the old product until the water runs as clear as possible.
  2. Apply about a quarter-size amount or more of clarifying shampoo to the palms and massage it into your child’s scalp using the ball of your fingertips.
  3. Once a lather has been formed, finger through and DOWN the hair in a piano stroking motion. Never ball your child’s tresses on top of their head. That will only create knots and make detangling even more complicated.
  4. Rinse slightly and repeat if necessary. If you achieved a rich lather the first time, no need to repeat. Just rinse out thoroughly, allowing the water to run over the hair while you finger through the tresses to remove the soapy suds.
  5. Squeeze excess water out of the hair.

Step 2: Reconditioning
It’s wise to do this next part in sections and once each section has been conditioned and detangled, twist or braid it loosely so as to prevent it from tangling up again.

Directions:

  1. When applying conditioner, apply to the ends of your child’s tresses first, saturating the ends, smoothing and working your way up towards the scalp. It is not necessary to start at the scalp.
  2. Once saturated, using a wide-tooth comb, Denman brush or double tooth comb, hold the section upon which you are working in a ponytail and start detangling from the ends first, working upwards (the tighter you grasp the hair into a ponytail, the less pain the child will feel). Twist or braid each section prior to moving to the next section.
  3. Whiling leaving the hair in twists or braids, rinse the conditioner out, leaving a good 10% of the conditioner in the hair. (If you are deep conditioning right after this step, it is also okay to leave the conditioner in and apply the deep treatment directly on top of it.)

Step 3: Re-hydrating/Deep Conditioning
A deep penetrating, hydrating moisturizing mask should be done at least once a month.

Directions:

  1. This type of conditioner can be done with or without heat. However, when heat and a plastic cap are applied, it is more intensive. The heat opens the cuticle layers of the hairs shaft allowing the necessary moisture, protein and oils to penetrate deeper and bond to the inner molecular layers of the strands, which helps repair and strengthen the hair.
  2. When deep conditioning, be sure to rinse with a slightly cooler water temperature to seal and lock in all the good stuff for our little ones ;) .

Hope that I was of some help to the guardians of our future manes ;) !

Please feel free to inquire about anything. I would love to hear from you and help guide you through you and your child’s natural hair journey!

Many blessings,

Tameeka McNeil-Johnson

Michelle’s Jaded Tresses Haircut Party!

Standard

Jaded Tresses is taking the world by storm!! *lol* So, as most of you know, I helped organize a haircut party a few weeks ago (if you missed that post, check it out here). Well, shortly thereafter, I learned that one of my readers, Michelle (I know, I know, which Michelle? ;) ), was organizing her own haircut party with #TheCurlWhisperer aka Tameeka McNeil-Johnson. Of course I told her, “I WANT PICS!!” And here they are … the before and afters of all these lovely ladies in their kinky, curly, coily GLORY!! (Captions provided by Michelle;).

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

LOVES IT!!! It makes me sooooo happy to see all of these gorgeous naturals. But, what really makes me smile is to see all of THEIR smiles!! So often, we come out of salons as naturals disappointed or upset after a haircut. To see so many ladies ecstatic is exhilarating and I want to personally thank Tameeka for sharing her gift with us!!

Post Haircut Length Check

Standard

Hi guys! Just a quick post to show you my hair length after the cut this past Sunday. As you can see, the longest layer is still waist length. My longest lengths had grown past that point and my “lead” hairs were approaching tailbone length. But, the gap between that hair and my shorter crown area was too wide. This haircut has finally freed my “new growth” so that my ends are curling again and volumizing shrinkage has returned. Whoop Whoop (That’s for you Gina. ;) )!!

Now, here are a few more pics, including shots of the front of my hair, comparing my length now to 4/23/12, after 3 inches of trimming. The front is where significant amounts of hair were cut to create some frace framing layers. The back was layered and the ends were cleaned up a lot! Again, I LOVE my new haircut!!

So, as you can see, although my hair looks a lot shorter, I really didn’t lose a huge amount of length! It’s just that my curls are no longer hidden by my old henna loosened ends. I really feel like I transitioned and finally cut off the “relaxed ends” that weren’t allowing my curls to fully reveal themselves! Of course, an EXCEPTIONAL cut has a lot to do with it too! Alright, time for me to wash this mop! I applied Aubrey GPB mixed with Vatika oil this morning and let it “marinate” for a few hours. Now it’s time to hop in the shower and see if I still have my WnG game right with real curls;)!

My “photographer” getting in on the action ;) .

HAPPY SATURDAY!!
