Natural Hair in Fashion

Natural Hair in Fashion

by Tiffany of Natural Hair in the Media

Natural hair and fashion! What could be better? Thanks a tweet by SheaMoisture, I saw this summary on natural hair in the fashion world. In this article, author Marjon Carlos details the increasing trend of well-known black models choosing to wear their natural hair on the runway.

Among the shout-outs are models Alek Wek and Noemi Lenoir. Can I just say that it’s definitely refreshing to see an article like this in Vogue Italia? Update: Tata Naka was actually first featured in Vogue UK. Thanks to a tip from reader, you can go here and read about their inspiration for the line.

Inspired by Motown, the Autumn/Winter 2012-13 Tata Naka collection is shown here being unveiled during London’s Fashion Week.

As if by rite of passage, the Black model archive is filled with trials of hapharzard handling of one’s hair. Left in the hands of hairstylists deaf to the temperment of Black tresses, Black fashion pioneers have recounted tales of their coils and strands being stretched to their breaking, frayed ends; scalps carelessly permed, harshly scorched, battered with color, and left to be restored by weaves, wigs, and the shearing of frazzled locks.

It is uplifting then to see the newest pack of Black models storming the catwalks in full embrace of their natural hairstyles, from cropped Afros, flat tops, to buzzed scalps–and in turn being embraced by the industry that has typically approached Black hair with skepticism and harsh critique.

As Canadian model, Herieth Paul’s, almost ubiquitous presence on the top Fall 2012 catwalks of Burberry Prorsum, Diane Von Furstenberg, Yigal Azourel, Costello Tagliapietra shown, the model’s coiffed ‘fro isn’t for a second deterring her imminent ascent. Then there is of course Ajak Deng’s signature buzz that has marked her career, creating a striking, anomalous silhouette along the runways of Suno, Roksanda Ilincic, and Issa this season, as well as with her turns on couture’s Spring 2012 stages just last month. Newcomer Akuol de Mabior, the beautiful offspring of Sudan’s former Vice President, walked for Jasper Conran and Louise Gray under a crown of curls that bore a striking resemblance to the very style lauded actress, Viola Davis, made famous at Sunday’s Academy Awards. While Flaviana Mataka, Nana Keita, and Elyce Cole reimagined the Afro in its various forms for Vivienne Westwood Red, Ashish, and William Okpo, respectively.

As I read through the article, I am struck by many things. This includes the author’s mention of Viola Davis’ hair at the Oscar Awards. Was she suggesting that her appearance at the show with a TWA made natural hair “famous?” It was unclear to me, maybe something got lost in translation …

Was it a pivotal moment in the culture and politics of black hair? Sure, imo. Why? Because a well-known Hollywood actress rocked natural hair at such an important event. Whether or not she intended to, Davis probably increased the visibility of natural hair in the media significantly. It may mean that more people will start paying attention to (and perhaps embracing) natural hair.

To the author’s suggestion that “this reoccurring presence of natural Black hair on the runways certainly mirrors and could be correlated to the natural Black hair craze that is currently taking place off the runway,” I *nod* emphatically in response. Not only are celebrities like Solange Knowles wearing their natural hair, but everyday women are too. Women just like me and you. And to all the black models with natural hair: You. Better. Work.

Have you noticed natural hair in commercials, advertisements, on the runway? Is natural hair more than a trend? Why do you think there are more naturals in the media?

Layering Sheer Floral Patterns & TJ Maxx/Marshall’s Haul

Layering Sheer Floral Patterns & TJ Maxx/Marshall’s Haul

I know. My OOTD pics are so bootleg!! LOL! But, I’m not a fashion blogger by trade and Wei’s not around to take pics. So a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do … and the work it takes to crop out the door and mirror frame out of all these pics is just too much;)!

So, anywho, this is my work outfit from yesterday! I really liked it, so thought I’d share. The two tops are sheer florals I purchased from TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. I think they were hanging right next to each other, and I thought the two patterns worked well together as they were both petite florals with almost identical color schemes! As the cream top is billowy with a long hemline, I decided to pair it with a belted pencil skirt, also from Marshall’s. Pairing loose/oversized items with more form-fitting ones keeps the proportions balanced and prevents the figure from being swallowed up in too much fabric. Finally, I’m wearing these Vince Camuto fabric and patent leather platform peep-toes that I absolutely adore. I picked them up from MJM a few years ago (I should have gotten them in the black too :( !).

So, I also cleaned up at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s over the last week!! Figured I’d share my hauls as, for once, I’m sharing things I bought recently that you may be able to get if you are willing to hit a few stores in your area!! Whenever I have an improptu shopping spree, I refer to it as an “incident.” Well, yeah, I had several incidents in the last week! And sadly, I’m not even including the things I ordered online from ideeli and DSW!! BUT, most of the purchases were made with gift cards from my birthday, so they were essentially “free” … guilt free shopping … ahhh, that’s the life! LOL!! And get this, one of my purchases from DSW is being returned to the store, because I found the same shoes for $30 less at Marshall’s! Guilt free savings!!

Oh, one last thing. I don’t think any item was over $40!! Now, when you buy multiple items at $40 a piece, it can add up! But, I still think that I didn’t do too badly ;) !!

Have you had any “incidents” lately? Any major scores or deals?!? You know, sharing is caring ladies ;) !! *lol*

Filler Post

Filler Post

You know that episode that really doesn’t move the story along? … That one that isn’t tied to the big plot of the series in any way? … But they want to air a new episode instead of a re-run? Yup, that’s what this is. My filler episode ;) . So, these pics are of my still dirty hair, two days after moisturizing and sealing with Qhemet’s Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee and jojoba oil. The first two days, I made a side part and rolled the sides back into a low bun. Yesterday morning, I decided to put it into a low side bun.

It looked decent, but my hair was not feeling great. It was kind of crunchy and not feeling moisturized, despite the good lubing I gave it the other day. Couldn’t WAIT to wash it last night! So yeah, it’s clean now … but wasn’t the easiest of detangling sessions. I used the Terressentials Mud Wash for the second time and tried something new to deep condition. Buuuuuut, I’ll have to tell you all about that next episode, when we return to our regularly scheduled plotline ;) .

Oh, one last thing. Haven’t done an OOTD in a while and everyone seemed to like this one at work yesterday, so figured I’d share!

The pocketed tunic dress is a few seasons old from H&M. I’ve seen this same cut in different prints in later seasons though. The leggings and long cardi are from T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s, respectively. The tissue paper turtleneck is from Kohl’s. The Joe’s Jeans booties you’ve seen many times before. I sure am making certain that I get my $120 out of these!!

Alright, gotta go! Today’s the big day for Wei and me! Our families are meeting for the first time! Goodness!! Wish us luck! It’s going to be fun *fingers and toes crossed*! LOL!

Have an awesome weekend ladies!!

Happy Hump Day, Glams! This is one of my favorite faces of the day so far & I could not wait to share it with you!!! I used some obscure products today just for kicks & giggles. Hope you enjoy!

PRIMER: Coastal Scents Shadow Worx Matte e/s primer

BASE: Raspberry-colored cream eyeshadow (from Claire’s Cream e/s palette)… Trust me I know what you’re thinking… Claire’s Boutique sells wearable eyeshadow?!?!

Sham does it again ... well, she did it again, like, almost a year ago. But, I'm sayin', this is hot!! LOL! I would NEVER think to use a green eyeliner with a pink/purple lid!! Sham, if I ever have a real photo shoot, can I hire you to do my make-up in exchange for hair products?!?! LOL!!

Preppy Boho

Preppy Boho

Yeah, just made that up. I don’t know if a cardigan really makes it preppy, but work with me here. First however, I had the hardest time getting the flash to work for a shot of the back of the style I wore yesterday (see post with tutorial here)! Finally managed to get one last night and you can see the twists better (I need to work on my pinning job!). I should have painted the walls in the bathroom a matte color as the semi-gloss causes a glare from the light, so the auto flash won’t fire! If I’d only known 6 years ago that the bathroom would become my photo studio! LOL!!

On a completely unrelated note, if you ever drop your phone in the toilet at work … turn it off immediately … don’t try to wash it with a soapy paper towel while it’s on … don’t keep turning it off and on, freak out when the screen is frozen, breathe a sigh of relief when it starts working again … kind of … notice a dark spot on the right corner and finally decide to turn it all the way off … and then finally despair when it won’t turn on again hours later. Instead, turn it off IMMEDIATELY, submerge and seal it in a plastic bag full of rice as soon as possible and wait 48-72 hours. I’m hoping that I can help someone learn from my mistakes!! So yeah, I was down an iPhone from Monday morning to yesterday after work. But, I’m reconnnected. I’ll tell you one thing, I never thought I would love a phone so much!!

Okay, finally, the “Look of the Day.” Preppy Boho. Or so I’ve decided to coin it! It was almost 70 degrees here in NJ yesterday! (I’m really scared it’s gonna be snowing in June.) So, I felt like a little color was in order. I paired a long yellow cardigan (Merona from Target) and a “tissue paper,” scoop neck tee in orange with a floor-length, cotton tie-dye swishy skirt (street vendor in DC). I accessorized the look with brass-toned hoop earrings (H&M), two coordinating plastic and wood beaded bracelets (Kohl’s), a wide belt with an elasticized waistband and leather “front-girdle” in tan (TJ Maxx) and cuffed tan ankle boots (g Series Nike Air from Marshall’s).

The “skirt” can also be worn as a strapless dress! I love multi-purpose items, especially those that can be worn in all seasons! This is a picture from my family reunion last summer. I’m not posing to display the “full effect,” but you get the idea ;) .

Back to the outfit yesterday. I also left the house with a yellow flower in my hair. However, when I made a mid-morning bathroom stop at work … no flower. Oh no … not again. Remember the Bow Down incident? Fortunately, my flower did turn up! It never made it out of my car! So, it didn’t make the outfit yesterday, but here are a couple pictures of the recovered accessory;)! It’s so Boho, right?! *lol*

In other news, the plan (again) is to do a henna/indigo treatment as my grey roots are GLARING!! Then, hoping to convince Wei to go to a Whitney Houston Karaoke “tribute” a friend planned for Saturday evening. Won’t you help me try to persuade him to go?!? I mean, I’m the one who can’t sing to save her life! I don’t know what his concern is as he always tells me that he can sing ;) . Alright …

What do you have planned for the weekend?

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! In this post I am wearing something that I would typically wear to run errands around town.

Okay, I've been seeing Chic Savant "like" some of my fashion posts for a month or so now. But, I always see the "like" when I'm on my phone and can't do a lot of blog hopping. But today I was actually home and clicked on her blog. Okay, can you say FABU HAIR and STYLE?!?!? Oh my gosh, her hair is like ... yeah *wiping drool from mouth*! If you're reading lady, Hair Crush HairStory please!!!! LOL!! Anyway, here she is looking GORG, rocking one of my favorite pieces, a printed tie-neck blouse, with a popping yellow blazer, dark-wash skinny jeans and a neutral shoe! LOVES it!! I'll definitely be following this Chic Savant from now on;)!

More Pattern Mixing

More Pattern Mixing

Yup, I’m at it again ;) . Since I wore my hair in a bun most of last week and it is currently full of deep conditioner waiting to be rinsed, I don’t have a hair update for you this morning. I had planned to henna on Saturday night, but unexpected plans resulted in me getting home later than I expected. And by the time I finished pre-pooing, washing clothes and doing dishes, I knew a two-step henna/indigo would have me up to midnight. So, regular wash day it was!!

Anywho, since I don’t have anything hair related for you this morning, decided to share an outfit I wore last week. As you may know, I like to mix patterns and my first fashion tips post was about how to do this with ease (see it here).

Black and white tend to be staple colors in everyone’s closet and, for good reason. But, these basics can get very boring when always worn in solids and together. However, pairing black and white patterns can make these standbys “pop!” Here, I decided to wear a lightweight wool, A-line, black and white plaid skirt (Marshall’s) with a short-sleeve, heart print, black and white sweater (Joyce Leslie). I completed the look with herringbone textured black tights, black booties (Joe’s Jeans) and, for a pop of color, rhinestone studded strawberry earrings.

I think that a brightly colored tight would have been another way to add interest to this look, but decided to create a long, unbroken leg-line with a monochromatic look this time.

How do you give your basic blacks and whites personality?

Basic Black w/a Twist

Basic Black w/a Twist

I wasn’t originally planning on posting this outfit at all. However, I got so many compliments on it at work yesterday that I figured, “What the heck! Why not?” Now, I know this one won’t be everyone’s cup of tea as it’s a little eclectic and colorful. But, ya know, the ladies at work were loving it, so I thought a few of you might too ;) !

I started with a basic wrap dress from Walmart. It’s from their GEORGE line and I have it in black, brown and a subtle brown and taupe “leopardish” print. I got the printed one on clearance for about 10 bucks down in the boondocks of Virginia a few years ago. I couldn’t find it in any other colors in the store back home, so I hit Walmart.com and was able to snag the solids for about $19 each, I think.

I love wrap dresses as they are a classic shape and flattering for many body types, especially hourglass shapes (teetering on pear) like mine ;) . I think that they are a wardrobe essential and I have at least six of them. Anywho, I needed something quick and easy to wear, so this was it. Initially, I was thinking about wearing it with black tights and black leather calf-length boots. However, that just felt sooooo boring! So, then I thought of the purple slouchy booties that I showed you guys last week here. When I went into my tights/hose basket, I spotted some textured tights that matched the booties perfectly.

So, I pulled on the tights and boots, threw on a yellow beaded necklace and earring set and accessorized my hair with a bendie black hair scarf I got from the dollar store a couple of months ago. Initially, I adorned my hair with the DIY yellow flower clip I made last year. But, it felt like too much up top. So, I put it on the belt of the wrap dress instead. And, voilà!

That’s it. Hope that some of you like it as I took, like, 60 pics to get a few decent ones! LOL!!

How do you put a twist on basic black?

The Best Laid Plans

The Best Laid Plans

Well, not really. I only kinda sorta planned to wash my hair this weekend. You see, although my scalp is in serious need of a washing, you can’t tell and my hair still looks halfway decent! So, when push came to shove, I opted to do nothing on Saturday afternoon and, on Sunday, to finally fold the two mountains of clothes in laundry baskets and put them away with the two stacks of folded cardigans that have been sitting on the loveseat for 3 weeks (yeah, it’s been that bad).

So, that’s why I’ll be rocking a bun to work today. I have an important meeting this Wednesday and am trying to figure out if I should wash it before then or just leave it alone until Thursday. Guess it’ll depend on how it looks and how my scalp feels over the next couple of days. My scalp isn’t itchy, but I do have some “build-up,” which isn’t typical for me. I’m not sure what the cause is though. Maybe it’s because I only oiled my scalp once and it’s dead skin cells due to dryness? Anywho, I definitely want to wash it before the weekend as a good scalp scrubbing shampoo is looking good right about now.

On another note, here is a LOTD from last week. I LOVE tie-neck blouses, especially printed ones as I am a fan of layering them under vests, sweaters (short and long-sleeved) and blazers. Here, I’ve layered a sheer floral print, grey, baby blue, navy blue and deep plum tie-neck blouse under a deep plum short-sleeved wrap sweater. I don’t remember where I got the blouse, but probably Marshall’s, and I believe the sweater is from Old Navy. Then, I broke out a pair of staple black, wide leg pants and accessorized with a matching pin and clip-on earrings set I got from my local Goodwill. The baby blue of the “berries” on the pin and earrings picks up the blue in the blouse. Finally, I finished the look with purple, faux suede slouchy ankle boots (Sami by Dollhouse) that I got from MJM a couple of seasons ago.

Now, the thing is, though I liked this outfit, I really wanted to wear the blouse and sweater with my grey with baby blue pin-striped pencil skirt (Marshall’s) and grey patent leather peep-toes (Nine West). Buuuuut, I still don’t have any nude hose!!! So, I couldn’t. But, I took a few pictures to show you what I would have worn with the proper leg wear!

What did you do with your hair this weekend?

Pocketed Skirt and Long Vest

Pocketed Skirt and Long Vest

Okay, just a really quick post to show you an outfit from last week. In the hub bub of work and engagement blogs last week, quite a few posts got “wait listed!” ;) .

So, I LOVE skirts and dresses with pockets! They are just so cool and add a casual ease and elegance to any look. Well, this is a boldly printed skirt in tones of black, grey and mustard yellow. It has a wide, elasticized waistband, wide hem and large slash pockets. I picked it up at JCPenny’s on clearance; I’m pretty sure it was less than $20. I was bummed because they had it in a bold cheetah print too, but not in my size :( (in fact, this one is a little big too).

Anywho, I’m wearing the skirt with a black button down shirt and a long, sleeveless cotton vest with a gathered waistline in grey. Both of these items came from Marshall’s and/or TJ Maxx, I believe. Finally, I accessorized the look with a black wide waistband, elastic belt with a metallic buckle, black fishnets and black “cuffed” booties that I got on clearance at Marshall’s for, like, $15 (I snagged them in dark brown too).

Oh, what the heck? I’m going to make this a twofer since we are talking about pocketed skirts and dresses! If you recall, I told you that I ordered the Asos dress CurlyNikki wore to the Essence Black Women in Music Event here. Well, they (remember, I ordered a 6 and 8 to be safe) arrived last week, less than 7 days after I placed my order! I think the 6 fits the best, although it is a little snugger around the hips than I would like … reminding me that I need to get back on my grind.

The dress is definitely of good quality, nicely structured and the fabric is very weighty. The seams appear strong and well sewn (no pulls in odd places). However, because I could stand to lose a few pounds, the pockets were showing through the fabric more than I would like and I had to adjust them a bit to lay smoothly. I was thinking about just removing them and sewing the openings close!! However, I love to stick my hands in pockets, so I’ll lose the weight instead ;) .

Okay, without further ado … here are a couple of pics of me in the dress. As you can see, it was the same day as the pics above, because I’m wearing the same fishnets and boots!! LOL! Oh, and I’m soooo sucking my stomach in as much as possible so that I don’t look like a sausage stuffed in casing;)!

Oh, and just quickly, that QueCraft hair fork is getting a workout! It’s making bunning my pressed hair so easy!
