Hair As Theatre

Hair As Theatre

by Weusi

I know that it’s 2012, but it seems like this good hair versus bad hair thing will never die.

My mother sent me (ok … really she sent it to Shelli via me) a link to an article by Byron Woods in the INDY WEEKLY regarding a play that is being presented by Man Bites Dog Theater in Durham, NC called, I Love My Hair When It’s Good: And Then Again When It Looks Defiant and Impressive.

It looks like something worth going to check out … maybe I can get my mom and/or pop to go and write a review!

And this kind of confirms that this HAIRSCAPADES thing is really contagious. Well this in addition to the fact that my father commented on a post last week! Yes, my family loves Shelli and has embraced all things Hairscapades.

That’s all …

Hairscapades Meet-Up: The Recap

Hairscapades Meet-Up: The Recap

PICTURE HEAVY!!

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this about myself, but I’m suuuuuuch a procrastinator by nature. So, with that disclaimer, yeah, I have been meaning to do this post since the meet-up in DC on February 18th. And now, this is going to be a pretty short post (for me;) just to give you a quick run down of some of the fun and share more pictures!

So, what did we do? Glad you asked!

  • About 40 lovely young women convened at the Tap & Parlour on U Street in Washington, DC.

  • Everyone got a Sof’nFree Nothing But and Reviyve Blended Naturals Lemongrass soap sample at the door. Thanks to Shonda who volunteered at the last minute to be my helper, Michelle Howard Smith for the donation of the Revive soap!
  • We enjoyed fare from the restaurant (my turkey burger and sweet potato fries were delish … I was stuffing my mouth between meeting and greeting! LOL! ).
  • We had a “round table” discussion to share a little about our natural hairstories.
  • Two Sofn’Free Nothing But goodie bags stuffed with 4 full size products were awarded by raffle.
  • One “Hairscapades’ Favorites” prize was given away playing “How many items do you have in the ‘hair emergency kit’ in your purse?” I pulled out my bobby pins, scrunchies, flexi barrettes, headbands, jaw clips and scissors to see who had the most of these items. Miche’al killed it with nine, if I remember correctly!

Vatika oil, JBCO, HE HH & 2 boxes of Dulhan henna

  • Dr. Phoenyx Austin was our special guest and conducted a Q&A session that was very informative and a complete hit.

  • Dr. Phoenyx raffled a copy of her new book, “If You Love It, It Will Grow” and sold many more copies. (If you purchased the book, she’d LOVE it if you posted your review on Amazon.com!)
  • Finally, we wrapped up with a Product Swap Meet supplied with donations from under everyone’s sinks!!

It was a seriously good time!! I had so much fun meeting everyone and getting to meet so many of my friends in person:)!! Hopefully, we’ll be doing another one soon in New Jersey!! I just have to find a locale … don’t worry, I have a couple in mind;)!

If you want to see these pictures full size and others from the event, check out the albums on the Facebook Hairscapades page: Meet-Up Part I and Part II! And a special thanks to my photographers, Shonda, Michelle and Chloe (Part I) and Niah (Part II)!!

Hairscapades Meet-Up Photos!

Hey ladies! Just wanted to share a few photos from the event until I can give you the full recap!! When you read this, I’ll be driving back to New Jeru! But, to keep it brief (which you know is hard for me ;) ), we had a great turn-out and it was so much fun! Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the event!

Enjoy!

Dr. Phoenyx Austin: Special Guest at Hairscapades Meet-Up!

Dr. Phoenyx Austin: Special Guest at Hairscapades Meet-Up!

So, are you ready for this?!? Dr. Phoenyx Austin is going to make a special appearance at the Hairscapades Meet-Up on Saturday, February 18th in Washington, DC!!! And, she’s not coming alone!

It’s finally here – a book that takes a holistic approach to afro-textured hair care! Dr. Phoenyx Austin has a fabulous new book out titled, If You Love It, It Will Grow! A Guide To Growing Long Afro-Textured Hair. The book is available on her site, DrPhoenyx.com, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. You’ve probably seen Dr. Phoenyx (and her hair) mentioned on a few popular natural hair blogs, and now she’s written a book that shares all her personal and professional knowledge on growing and maintaining healthier and longer hair! Dr. Phoenyx Austin is a medical doctor and her book, unlike many others, is all about holisitic hair care. What does that mean? It means she covers healthy hair growth from the inside out – not hair growth based on whether hair is natural or relaxed. For example, she teaches women to use principles of nutrition, natural and organic hair products, as well as alternative medicine principles, such as aromatherapy and Ayurveda, to achieve healthy hair growth. She also addresses issues such as hair loss in Black women, as well as how to treat forms of scalp dermatitis (i.e. eczema). Overall, Dr. Phoenyx’s book is a fun, down to earth and informative read for women who are looking for a straightforward and educational guide to growing healthy, stronger and longer hair. Without a doubt, ALL women will benefit from this book.

Furthermore, Dr. Phoenyx emphasizes that her book is about a deeper message - a message of self-love and self-acceptance. She says that for many women, hair is not just hair. There is a great interconnectedness between how women feel about their hair and how they feel about themselves. In many ways, our hair is an extension of who we are. And in this book, she’s advocating that women love themselves, love their hair and treat their bodies well to achieve their beauty goals. In this book, she teaches women to start seeing and approaching their hair care from a place of mind, body and spirit!

About the Author:
Dr. Phoenyx Austin is a physician, author, media personality and entrepreneur. She enjoys discussing women’s topics related to beauty, relationships, culture and life and is widely known for engaging audiences with a witty, conversational tone and the intellect to back it up. Dr. Phoenyx has been featured in countless publications, lifestyle e-zines, beauty blogs and online magazines such as Essence. She has also been featured on popular syndicated television and radio shows on networks such as ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and Radio One.

OH YEAH BABY!! THAT’S RIGHT!!! IT IS ON!! LOL!! As many of you may already know, I was originally planning a meet-up last October to bring together some of my comrades-in-blog from the Curly Nikki Presents Kim Coles’ Grow Out Challenge and my new friends from Hairscapades. Well, Hurricane Irene decided that she wanted to ruin those plans!

Now, we have reached the end of our first Hairscapades GOC and I thought, “What better time to resurrect the meet-up?!”

With that being said, I would like to extend an invitation to all readers, GOCers (old and new), kinky, coily, curly, transitioning, contemplating transitioning, big chopping, lurking ;) and/or natural hair enthusiasts to the Hairscapades Natural Hair Meet-Up!!

So, come out and hang with me in DC on the 18th!! Meet fellow naturals, talk about products, techniques, styles and accessories. Also, bring your unwanted, never opened, partially used products, tools and/or accessories for the Product Swap Meet!! You’ll get rid of those “#FAILS,” in order to make room for that item (or two or ten … PJs, you know who you are) that you always wanted to try!! Lord knows y’all probably don’t need to bring anything as I’m sure I’ll have a box or two (yup, I’m one)!! LOL!! Oh, and maybe … just maybe … I might have a goody or two up my sleeve;)!  So, come out and admire the rainbow array of wonderful kinks, curls and coils that will surely be on display!! You’re sure to make a new “curlfriend” or two … or, ya know, twenty!!!

Please view the EVENT for the Meet-Up on the Hairscapades FB page and RSVP as I’m trying to get a head count. And, spread the word ;) !! Can’t wait to see you all!

Sofn’free at BET Honors

Sofn’free at BET Honors

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by the Public Relations Director at Sofn’free, Lisa Sperling, about their GroHealthy line of products and plans to launch a new line specifically for natural hair. We’ve been in talks ever since and soon I’ll be sponsoring a giveaway for their new natural hair line, Sofn’free Nothing But

Well, get this! Lisa happened to be at the BET Honors this Saturday too and sent me a short e-mail and picture that I wanted to share with all of you!

Beverly Kearney (honoree) and Will Williams (Director of Education and Product Development for Sofn'free).

Hi Shelli,

I was in D.C. this weekend too because of the BET Honors, but I didn’t attend the big event itself like you did. It sounds like quite a thrill.

I was at an event in conjunction with the BET Honors, the Black Opulence Gifting Suite set up for guests prior to the big event.  We gave a sneak peek of Sofn’free’s new Nothing But line.  We were lucky enough to have Honoree Beverly Kearney stop by and we had lots of fun meeting others who attended the awards event or were there to celebrate around it.

A little about Will Williams:

As Director of Education and New Product Development at M&M Products Company, Will has worked all over the world. He has styled practically every type and texture of natural hair. A recognized hair-care expert and Master Cosmetologist, he has won numerous industry competitions and worked with some the biggest names in the business, like Jheri Redding and John Paul Mitchell Systems. On behalf of M&M Products Company and its Sofn’free® branded products, he trains salon professionals and retail distributors in the United States, Europe, South America and Africa.

But if you ask Will, he’ll say his favorite thing to do is talk one-on-one with the person sitting in his chair. See, even after 30 years, Will is still madly in love with hair. From wild manes of glossy, defined curls to stunningly simple TWAs (Teenie Weenie Afros), Will has never met a curl he didn’t like  or one he didn’t know how to make look simply fabulous.

One last note, Beverly Kearney is a seven time National Championship winning track coach with an AMAZING story that I learned at the Honors. Her story was truly inspiring and her beauty and strength shone from the inside out. If you’d like to learn more about her story and triumph over a paralyzing spinal cord injury, click here!

Robert Cradle: 2012 Give Back Day Hero

Robert Cradle: 2012 Give Back Day Hero

With the help of Rodney Peete, a former NFL quarterback and co-founder of the HollyRod Foundation, Allstate Insurance Company kicked off their 4th Annual National Give Back Day. This is a program that pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by encouraging individuals to volunteer in their communities on MLK Day, January 16, 2012, and every day. As part of the program, Allstate recognizes four African-American Give Back Day Heroes in different cities across the U.S. for their commitment to community service.

This year, Robert Cradle, a Baltimore native and founder of Rob’s Barbershop Community Foundation, has been chosen as one of the Give Back Day Heroes. A talented barber who now provides grooming services to the underprivileged community of Baltimore, Rob has a very unique story that I thought you all might enjoy.

Because of his selfless work of providing haircuts to persons who may not have the resources or freedom to go to a barbershop, Robert Cradle has recently been honored by Allstate Insurance Company as a Give Back Day Hero. When I heard about the great work he’s doing, I knew that I wanted to interview him!

To many, the barbershop is a sacred place, in part because it’s a place where aesthetic pride is groomed and community relationships are developed. Robert Cradle is a barber in Baltimore, MD, who has taken this to another level! I’ll let him tell you about it!

Congratulations on the recent honor! Can you tell the readers about your organization, the work you do and your recent honors?

Thank you! Rob’s Barbershop Community Foundation (RBCF) is an organization that raises funds to operate projects that provide grooming services and products to individuals who cannot afford them. Our current projects consist of operating two full-service barber/beauty shops located in two Baltimore Area homeless shelters.

I am currently in the process of being honored by Allstate as one of their Give Back Day Heroes. I am so excited about this honor because Allstate is using my story as a way of inspiring others to volunteer in their respective communities on the Martin Luther King holiday.

How did the idea for the organization come about?

The idea came about when I used to own a barber shop that was near a homeless shelter. I met the volunteer coordinator of that shelter who told me that their residents could not afford to patronize the local barbers or beauty salons. Many of the shelter’s residents lived below the poverty level and many had several children. So I decided not to just handle the problem alone, but created an effort that would also allow the community to get involved. I placed a collection box at my barbershop so my customers could contribute toward the cost of hiring barbers to go to local shelters and provide free grooming. This approach would, in essence, create a win-win situation. Local barbers would be employed, the public would have a good cause to donate towards and, most of all, individuals living at poverty level would have access to services and products that they are currently unable to afford. Now they are able to attend job interviews and school with a neat and clean appearance!

Can you tell us a little about what it took to make the transition from informal favors to an official organization?

It took a lot of training. To make the transition, I had to take classes on non-profit management and fundraising. I read tons of books/manuals and did lots of research. I also did some volunteer work with other non-profits and churches to get some hands-on experience. It made a big difference. The education and experience helped me to know what to expect and how to avoid mistakes.

Baltimore gets a bad reputation via some TV shows and mass media. The nickname, “B-more careful” is one of the most gangster nicknames for a city that I’ve ever heard! Do you think that the media depictions of the city are true? Do you see the city changing? How? What would you like people to know about Baltimore?

Sadly, most (if not all) of the depictions are true. Baltimore is a place suffering from some really systemic problems. I love Baltimore and won’t take shots at it, but I will give credit to all of the media sources that have pretty much displayed the truth about the city. Baltimore will eventually change, because personally I think that there are many stakeholders that see the city as an economic force. So, they are going to work hard to relieve those problems that create that negative reputation. This mostly has to do with lowering the level of crime, violence, poverty, drugs and their lingering effects.

I would like people to know that Baltimore has its own unique identity that really could be appreciated on a national stage. We actually have our own unique culture, style, language, music, art, history, heroes and hairstyles, which is unlike any other city in this country.

I have to ask you about hair trends in Baltimore. I heard that the DC-bred Temple Taper is making a comeback and that the designs in the hair are getting more elaborate. But, I also heard that the Philly-style darkened waves and full beards are in there too . What trends have you seen?

Lately, I’ve noticed a comeback in hi-top box fades and different variations of the Mohawk. It’s more of a return of the 80′s style, which is cool because that’s when I was a teenager and got a chance to wear those same types of styles.

Do you cut both male and female patrons?

Yes. Male, female, Black and White. Fortunately, I’ve worked in all types of shops: upscale, “hood,” military, small-town, you name it. I was also a teacher in a barber school for a couple of years, so I had to have some experience in several different areas of cutting and styling to be able to teach others.

Do you stay abreast of natural hair, hair products, technology and healthcare for brothers? If so, what would you say is the best thing brothers can do to take care of their hair?

Yes, I pretty much stay abreast of all the new products and equipment that come along. My advice is that brothers should focus more on the ingredients of products, rather than focus on the brand name. Focus on which consistency (cream, lotion, gel, pomade, oil, grease, liquid) gives you your desired result, rather than what the label promises it will do. Try each consistency; you will eventually find out what works best.

What do you think is the worst common practice that brothers are doing now that they should stop? Coming to the shop with too much grease (or any product) in their hair. The cleaner the hair, the better the haircut! That goes for anyone of any gender or race. I know it may not be possible all of the time but, believe it or not, we want to do our best for our customers.

We know that barbers have to keep up with various aesthetics/styles, but is there a role of responsibility to community that barbers should also have?

A barber’s responsibility to the community is basically a personal decision. Their decision should jive with the owner’s mission of the shop as a whole. Nevertheless, the least any barber/cosmetologist should do is abide by the rules and regulations of their state’s Board of Barbers/Cosmetologist.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with the readers of Hairscapades?

Sure. I would like people to know that there are many people who can’t go to the barber and/or beauty salon. Just think, if you did not have access to regular grooming services, your entire life would change. You could actually lose a job or maybe even a relationship. People would even treat you differently. There are children who are neglected, abused, live with an elderly grandparent, have too many sibling in one household, etc., so they may not get regular grooming. You can see them at any school near you. There are also so many adults who are homeless, laid-off or have to opt for food and housing and forgo regular grooming.

Thank you Robert!!

And with that last sentiment, let’s remember the 5th Principle of Kwanzaa, NIA, which means purpose in kiswahilli. The word is included within KWANZAA’s seven principles (Nguzu Saba) because of the idea that, collectively, we should work to improve our community and restore it to its historical greatness. So, with that being said …

Robert Cradle … on this, the 5th day of KWANZAA … in the spirit of NIA … I salute you!
